NCKU hosts APEC marine environment meeting
Tainan, Taiwan, September 23, 2014
The 15th APEC Roundtable Meeting on the Involvement of the Business/Private Sector in the Sustainability of the Marine Environment kicks off at National Cheng Kung University (NCKU), southern Taiwan, on September 23 with more than thirty representatives from nine countries including China, Japan, Korea, Malaysia, Vietnam, and the Philippines.
Dr. Shin-Cheng Yeh, Deputy Minister of Environmental Protection Administration, attended the opening ceremony and said, “This roundtable meeting is part of our efforts to advance ocean agenda in the APEC.”
“Ocean-related issues are diversified and complicated,” according to Deputy Minister Yeh, “and to deal with the issues requires information sharing and exchange of views.”
“I believe our roundtable meeting today can be deemed as a good demonstration of good partnership,” Deputy Minister Yeh added.
NCKU President Hwung-Hweng Hwung extended his warm welcome to the guests and said, “NCKU is one of the two best comprehensive universities in Taiwan.”
President Hwung who is also a renowned hydraulic expert said that the coastal area disaster mitigation is vital to the sustainable environmental management.
In this meeting, we have representatives from nine nations, addressing to various issues on wetland conservation and eel resource conservation as well, President Hwung added.
Suseno Sukoyono, Director General of Marine Affairs and Fisheries Human Resources Development, Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries, Indonesia, said, “I think this is a great opportunity for me and also for Indonesia to access some few expertise and information of how we can move forward for better management of wetland.”
Sukoyono talked about the wetland management and development in Indonesia in the first section in the first day meeting.
The topics in the section of wetland conservation include Wetlands Conservation in Chinese Taipei, Indonesia Coastal Wetlands Management and Development, Conservation of Tasek Bera Ramsar Site, Managing Black-faced Spoonbills Wintering Habitat by Developing their Forging Friendly Aquiculture Wetland, and Introduction of National Survey Program on Coastal Wetland Ecosystem in Korea.
In the section of eel resource conservation and management, topics covered are Contribution of Artificial Production Technique of Glass Eels for Conservation of Anguillid Eel Populations in the World, Diversity of Habitat Use by Anguillid Eels as Revealed by Otolith Microchemistry, Resource Status and Conservation of the Eel, The Restocking Programs of Japanese Eel, Anguilla japonica , Tropical Eel Recruitment, and Effects of Elver Exploitation and Habitat Deterioration on the Eel Population.
The three-day meeting will end on September 25 with a scientific tour.
