National Cheng Kung University (NCKU) Institute of Creative Industries Design (ICID) Associate Professor Dr. Shyhnan Liou had his transnational reserch published in one of the most prestigeous academic journal, Emotion, recently.

The research paper entitled “The Role of Instrumental Emotion Regulation in the Emotions–Creativity Link: How Worries Render Individuals With High Neuroticism More Creative” describes the revolutionary findings that worry can actually enhance creativity.

Soon after the publication of the paper, an article written by Tom Jacobs in Pacific Standard Magazine had a name for the findings, “the Woody Allen effect.”

We should recognize the individual difference in preferred mood, and change the stereotyped negative regard of worry and anxiety in our work life, according to Dr. Liou.

The findings offer a new perspective to the controversy concerning the emotions–creativity relationship and further demonstrate the role of instrumental emotion regulation in the domain of creative performance.

Dr. Liou’s research area is mainly on culture effect on creativity processing and team innovation, organizational innovation in R&D institutes, and transdisciplinary collaboration in integrative research.

He also noted, this study is one of our international collaboration projects on creativity. Our project extent these mood-creativity links study to team creativity process of interdisciplinary collaboration in R&D institute.

We are grateful to our team leader Chi-yue Chiu at Nanyang Technological University and Chinese Academy of Social Sciences and Angela Leung at Singapore Management University, Dr. Liou added.

He pointed out that leadership should consider individual’s trait and help their trait-consistent emotion regulation not just foster positive mood.

“Creative talents should be trained as more self-monitoring and understand what work conditions are best fit to their regulatory motivation in goal pursuit,” according to Dr. Liou.
