A total of twelve students from National Cheng Kung University (NCKU), southern Taiwan, organized as an overseas service learning group to travel to Yunfeng Village in Yunnan, China, with a mission to be involved in a community development project by constructing environmental-friendly toilets and to exposure to the cultural and geographical context.

During their two-week stay at the village, the students build ten toilets for the poor households and brought home with warm memories full of heart-felt feelings and insights.

It is noteworthy that a 14-year-old teen coming from Hope House Shelter joined the NCKU team to help the people in Yunnan.

Before departure, students received more than 40 hours of training, taking courses including communication skills, conflict management, and reflection skills.

“This is our fifth time to set up the environmental-friendly toilets for the villagers at Yunnan,” according to Po-Kai Hu from the Department of Engineering at NCKU.

Jen-Chuan Tsao from the Department of Business Administration said, “Although the village equipped with the waste water treatment systems, most of the households there are still lack of toilets which leaves the sanitary issues a big problem to be solved.”

Under the guidance of the local construction workers, the students had learned to dig, move bricks and cement, lay the bricks and paste.

The ten eco-friendly toilets with doors and producing natural fertilizer were constructed after days of hard work.

In addition, the students also served as tutors for the elementary students at the village, helping the children to appreciate the beauty of the world and familiarize some cultural aspects regarding Taiwan as well.

Since 2010, NCKU has sent social learning groups to remote villages in Yunan including Xiaotieyao Village, Xiangyang Village, and JinheVillage.

Their goal is not just to build environmentally friendly toilets but to spread better environmental health concepts, so that local residents can practice a healthy and eco-friendly lifestyle.
