Literature courses open by civil engineering professor
Tainan, Taiwan, June 11, 2014
Professor Frederick Hsia who is also a well-known writer in Taiwan has opened four literature-related courses for students who are not Liberal Arts majors in National Cheng Kung University (NCKU), southern Taiwan.
Fully packed with students, two of Prof. Hsia’s classes even consist of more than a hundred students, according to the university.
Although trained as a civil engineer, Professor Hsia taught comparative literature in leading universities in Taiwan. He is known as the “only” literature professor who does not posses formal scholastic training in the field.
Under the “Aim for the Top University Project” by Ministry of Education, Dr. Hsia was invited to his alma mater, NCKU, as a visiting specialist to open four Foreign Literature courses.
The titles of the four courses are Introduction to Modern European Literature, An Introduction to Modern European Literature and Film, Introduction to Modern American Literature and Contemporary Japanese Literature, and An Introduction to Contemporary American and Japanese Literature and Film.
A total of 367 students who are not in the Department of Liberal Arts took the courses, most of them coming from College of Medicine and Department of Hydraulic and Ocean Engineering.
“Engineers possess two unique characteristics: responsible and good at problem-solving, but often lack of literature and cultural edification as compared to other sectors,” according to Prof. Hsia.
Prof. Hsia hopes that apart from accumulating fundamental engineering knowledge, the students can broaden their views and be in touch with different fields in order to enhance their literary knowledge under the presence of rational thoughts and emotions.
Born in writer's family, Hsia was attracted to the world of literature since young time.
His father, known as Ho Fan, was a columnist and his mother, Lin Hai Yin, was the writer of the famous novel - Old Stories in City's South End. She was also considered highly instrumental in shaping development of Chinese literature in Taiwan.
In 1994, Professor Hsia was awarded National Art and Literature Medal, the highest honor in the country for recognition of the achievements in art and literature.
The medal was awarded to recognize the excellent writing in his novel - The Summer Hunter.
