Conference on international and cross-strait affairs kicks off at NCKU - Noodls

The Executive Conference on International and Cross-Strait Affairs 2014 takes place at National Cheng Kung University (NCKU), southern Taiwan, on June 5 with approximately 200 representatives of the offices of foreign affairs from universities in Taiwan, Korea, Macau, Hong Kong, and China.

Ministry of Education (MOE) Political Deputy Minister Huang Pi-Twan attended the opening ceremony and gave her remarks.

She said, Foundation for International Cooperation in Higher Education of Taiwan (FICHET) has contributed a lot to promote the internationalization of higher education in the country.

With the help of FICHET, a communication platform has been set up among the universities in Taiwan, which may facilitate the promotion of international affairs in the universities, she added.

NCKU President Hwung Hwung-Hweng extended his warm welcome to all the guests in the conference and said, there is no such thing as a standard mode for internationalization and a school should know its characteristics and develop its own strategic plan to recruit international students.

The Executive Conference on International and Cross-Strait Affairs 2014 is hosted by FICHET which is a non-profit organization to promote Taiwan higher education overseas.

The first keynote was given by Huang Wan-Ling, Director-General at the Department of Higher Education, MOE, in the title of "Strategies for Taiwan's Higher Education Internationalization."

In her talk, she pointed out the difficulties of higher education in Taiwan and said that the need for liberalization in university governance is urgent and Taiwan's universities need to be more open, forward-looking, and flexible.

She also talked about the education innovation in Free Economic Pilot Zones (FEPZs) which are trial zones for a free economy.

She noted that FEPZs implementation will include selection of high quality partners, trail point implementation to explore the possibility and to open up competition to raise the international profile.

The second keynote was given by Haydn H. D. Chen, Vice Rector of University of Macau and Gordon W. H. Cheung, Associate Vice-President of the Chinese University of Hong Kong, to talk about international education in Macau and Hong Kong respectively.

The last keynote was given by Jun-Hyun Hong, President of Korean Association of Foreign Student Administrators (KAFSA), and Hong-Wei Xia, Director of the Office of International Relations, Peking University, China, to explore internationalization of higher education in Korea and China, respectively.

In addition to the keynote speeches, the conference had six plenary sessions to discuss the issues including the recruitment of students, the changing of admission regulations, travel smartly, regulations governing remaining in Taiwan, and the learning environment for international students.
