Hungarian student makes debut as English news anchor at NCKU

The National Cheng Kung University (NCKU) News Center recently welcomed its new foreign student news anchor from Hungary.
Currently studying at the NCKU Department of Chinese Literature, Gabor Kovacs is the latest addition to the NCKU English news anchor team and has already recorded his debut NCKU English news video on April 28.
Kovacs revealed that he has been telling his friends and family about his role at NCKU News Center, hoping that his debut news video can be viewed all over the world on the Internet.
NCKU Department of Foreign Language and Literature Assistant Professor Dr. Carolyn Scott, advisor to the NCKU English news anchor team, said that Kovacs is well-prepared and his debut in broadcasting news is refreshing.
“Having the opportunity to work as a student anchor is an unusual yet memorable life experience,” said Kovacs. “Besides, using English to report NCKU news is excellent as it enables the world to know more about NCKU and Taiwan.”
At the beginning, Kovacs has some doubts over his ability to take up the role of English news anchor at NCKU News Center.
Therefore, he spent time reading NCKU news as well as consulted experienced news anchor for learning tips beforehand. He even practiced pronunciation, how to have a good stage presence, and writing news scripts while receiving guidance and useful tips from Prof. Scott.
Kovacs noted that Prof. Scott’s presence and guidance helped calm him down throughout his first ever news video recording session and hoped his performance will improve a great deal in the future.
Kovacs came to Taiwan five years ago, having proficient in his mother language Hungarian, English, Mandarin Chinese and German.
According to Kovacs, he watched Jackie Chan’s movies at the age of 8 and was deeply attracted by Kung Fu and oriental culture ever since. Therefore, he started learning Chinese in Hungary when he was 10.
He stayed in Mainland China one year before arriving at Taiwan, and enrolled in the Master’s degree program in Chinese Literature on the recommendation of his friend, having known that NCKU is one of the top two universities in Taiwan.
Currently, Kovacs is studying Taoism as part of his degree and hopes to work in Taiwan in the future.
“Taiwanese people are very kind. Besides, life in Tainan is easy and the food in Tainan is very delicious too,” added Kovacs when asked about his impression of Taiwan.
NCKU is the first university in Taiwan to launch a digital news channel. Since its launch in December 2012, the news channel reported Chinese news. A group of English news anchor was recruited in 2013 with the help of NCKU Department of Foreign Language and Literature, and the first English news video was officially launched in May the same year, broadcasting NCKU news in both Chinese and English to all over the world.
Currently, NCKU News Center consists of 15 Chinese news anchors and 7 English news anchors.
