NCKU professor honored with Pan Wen Yuan Foundation Outstanding Research Award - Noodls
National Cheng Kung University Institute of Manufacturing Information and Systems (NCKU IME) Chair Professor Dr. Fan-Tien Cheng was recently honored with the 2014 Pan Wen Yuan Foundation Outstanding Research Award which also includes two trophies and cash reward worth NT 500 thousand dollars.
As Dr. Cheng’s research inventions have also been transferred to a number of semiconductor, panel and solar energy manufacturers in recent years, he has demonstrated highly contributive achievements in not only academic research, but also industrial development.
The award-giving ceremony will be held between end of June and early July at the Hsinchu-based Industrial Technology Research Institute (ITRI).
Pan Wen Yuan Foundation Outstanding Research Award aims to commemorate outstanding local and foreign researchers of Chinese descent who have not only made theoretical innovations, experimental technique developments, production process enhancement or instrument production with international standards, but also led large-scale or integrative projects with excellent performance in the area of electronics, information technology, telecommunication and others.
Not more than three potential candidates, who come from Taiwan, Mainland China and/or other foreign countries, will be selected once every year.
As the pioneer of virtual metrology research in the global semiconductor manufacturing, Dr. Cheng was the first NCKU Department of Electrical Engineering graduate to join the Chung-Shan Institute of Science and Technology (CSIST) in 1976.
Throughout his 19-year service at CSIST, he worked his way up to the position of Senior Technical Supervisor-cum-Research since starting off as a research assistant.
Upon returning to NCKU to take up a teaching position at IME in 1995, Dr. Cheng continued to focus on his research effort on automation system and integration technology which were then applied to the research on production process enhancement, production automation and e-manufacturing used in various industries, including semiconductor (Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company and United Microelectronics Corporation), flat panel (Chi Mei), solar cells (Motech) and machinery tool.
In the past 15 years, Dr. Cheng has hosted a number of research projects or programs including the Academic Technology Development Program, Sustainable Growth Project, Research and Development Advancement Program, the National Science Council (NSC) Automation Intelligence Programs and other industry-academia collaboration projects.
Most of these research projects or programs focus on the production process enhancement and production automation of the semiconductor industry, flat panel industry as well as solar cell industry.
These research outcomes not only have been published in top Science Citation Index (SCI) academic journals and Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) journals, but have also been awarded approximately 10 patents in Taiwan and foreign countries.
Alongside his contributions in the aforementioned areas, Dr. Cheng also pioneered academic research on virtual metrology, where he has already published approximately 16 journal articles and also obtained patents from five countries.
These patents have already set up a comprehensive patent map which will not be easily reached or overcome by other research teams.
Moreover, Dr. Cheng has also successfully transferred 22 of his inventions or research technology to semiconductor manufacturers, flat panel manufacturers and solar cell manufacturers.
