NCKU’s annual campus run draws more than a thousand participants - Noodls

The “2014 Campus Run”, one of the annual featured events of National Cheng Kung University (NCKU), was held at 8 a.m. on April 26.

Approximately 1,500 participants including NCKU teaching staff, students and sport-loving locals challenged themselves in the course while being cheered by approximately 200 supporters and spectators along the way.

The event was considered the climax of the Health and Fitness Week in NCKU, according to the university.

The marathon event was officially launched by Vice President Hong-Sen Yan alongside NCKU Art Center Director Wen-Jen Hsieh, NCKU Office of Academic Affairs Associate Vice President Perng-Jy Tsai and others.

Also, American Institute in Taiwan (AIT) Kaohsiung Branch Manager Mr. Gary G. Oba led the participants at the start of the event.

“The academic achievements made by NCKU is for all to see,” said Vice President Yan on behalf of NCKU President Hwung-Hweng Hwung.

Being a comprehensive university with about 22,000 students, I hope that both students and professors at NCKU can work together not only to achieve excellence in academic and research, but also exhibit good performance in sports and other activities and become healthier, according to Yan.

The 20-year old event, which was divided by identity - student, employees /administrative leaders and local community - and subdivided according to gender, has become a well-recognized annual competition that has attracted the participation of the locals and the NCKU campus residents for personal achievement and the rewards on offer.

According to the tradition of the event, male participants had to run a longer distance as far as the ChengKung campus, unlike their female counterparts who were only required to cover a 3-kilometre distance within the Kuangfu Campus.

At the end of the event, the top 10 participants in the student category and the top 6 participants in the employees/administrative leaders and local community categories were awarded medals and certificates.

Interestingly, the top 20 and the top 100 participants in the local community category and other categories respectively were chosen as the NCKU health and fitness ambassadors and given two ambassador T-shirts as part of a creative effort to promote health and fitness in the local community.
