National Cheng Kung University (NCKU), southern Taiwan, hosted a homecoming for young alumni recently. The third career salon where successful young alumni invited to share their experience took place at 14:00, April 12, at the International Conference Hall, Kuang-Fu Campus, NCKU.

The four speakers all have cross-industry experiences, and willingly shared their opinions, stressing that, as long as you are certain of your choices and are brave, strong, and unafraid to lose, then you will succeed in your path.

The speakers are Zhi-Hao Zheng (鄭之昊), the founder of 雅伯莉建設, Kai-Cherng Chang (張凱政), a civil engineer, Wei-Wen Cherng (鄭惟文), an interior designer, and Chuan-Wen Chou (周傳文), an architectural design consultant.

During the salon, Professor Shin-Tao Chang (張行道) of the Department of Civil Engineering expressed his opinion that life is a journey filled with different opportunities and turning points, and is “delighted to see students pursuing paths that suit them.”

Chang further praises the initiative of Wei-Guo Lee (李偉國) in founding the “Young Alumni Career Salon” activity, stating that communication between young NCKU alumni – with their varied professional backgrounds and youthful turn of phrases – and current NCKU students is a crucial source of the latest industry-related intelligence for underclassmen, and is both meaningful and useful.

Zheng who, as a student, was an enthusiastic part-timer said that he believes that failure is a necessary occurrence before success, and the better you experience it, the better.

“A good way to experience this is through part-timing,” he encourages, “as long as it does not interfere with academic obligations”. He also advises the underclassmen to train themselves in endurance and perseverance.”

Chang adds that, as long as you have clearly though about it, go for it, no matter what others think. “It is better to have failed trying, than to regret not attempting at all”, he says. “Even if you do not achieve 100%, know what 100% is, and why you failed to achieve it.”

Cherng, on the other hand, stresses that the two most important things in life are finding a job you love and a person you love most.

“One maintains professionalism if they enjoy their work,” she says, “and the more professional you are, you naturally gain more success.” The process may be difficult, but without love for what you do, it is easy to give up half-way.

Chou who is now the simultaneous doctoral student, AAL researcher, and entrepreneur confessed that there are many things he hopes to do, but wanting to do one project does not necessarily mean giving up another. “The most important thing is to focus and complete the work at hand.”
