NCKU Department of Industrial Design hosts “Q to A+” Graduate Exhibition

(中央社訊息服務20140423 16:48:59)The 51 graduating students of NCKU’s Department of Industrial Design were tasked with designing their final project, and the 17 masterpieces – a culmination of 4 years of hard work – are currently on display at the NCKU Museum, until the 19th.

Covering a wide range of topics from forest fire safety to leisure enhancements, the designs not only solves the issue at hand, but aims to also invoke thought and encourage people to live their lives differently, in order to achieve a better quality of life.

The exhibition is titled “Q to A+”, as it “represents the process from the identification of the problem, to finding the [best possible] solution”, says Wen-Yu Yang (楊文瑜), Graduate Exhibition coordinator.

The students’ imagination were limitless, and their creations target issues ranging from food safety to aid for the disabled. In response to last year’s edible oil scare, students designed “一日油行”, a simple oil expeller which utilizes the traditional cold compress mechanism to manually extract the oil they consume.

Kun-Han Hung (洪崑涵), who dislikes eating vegetables yet understands its importance in our diet, decided to collaborate with two fellow students to design “蔬頗好玩”, which involves cutting the vegetables into thin slices, drying it, then grinding it into powder. The device allows parents to make vegetable powder easily, and makes vegetable intake both fun and nutritious for children.

Singletons can also be a designer’s muse, and「恰到好廚」is one such example. The creation is a miniature kitchen – perfectly equipped with all one would need to cook – along with collapsible table and chairs. According to the female student who designed it, the design allows one to enjoy both the happiness in cooking, as well as socializing in the kitchen space.

“Kitsune”, on the other hand, is a large mountain forest fire-extinguisher truck that has the uphill power and maneuverability to traipse about the forest, but also possesses different modules which can extinguish fires, build fire lines, as well as carry out daily transportation requirements.

As for “Nightmart Clean”, it is a new dining table designed specifically with night markets in mind. The mobile table-top idea originates from the desire to combat dirty tables when dining out at night markets, which are sure to be greasy and, owing to the fact that it is removable, the device allows people (vendors) to remove both rubbish and grease in one sweep, allowing for clean table surfaces.

In addition to the exhibition, students also held a series of speeches, inviting speakers such as Yi-Min Bao (包益民), the founder of《PPAPER》; Henry Chang (張博翔), Design Manager of Gearlab; and Jeff Guo (郭建甫), CEO of Gogolook.

Upon completion of the school exhibition, the students will continue to participate in the May 2014 Young Designers’ Exhibition (YODEX), to further promote designing to interested citizens, enterprises, and organizations.
