NCKU, Kyoto University foster partnership in Informatics research

To foster international partnership with Kyoto University from Japan, National Cheng Kung University (NCKU), southern Taiwan, hosted a seminar on Informatics, March 17-19, with more than 90 scholars and students from the two universities gathering together to share their researches.
A total of 22 experts from Taiwan and Japan talked about their research and the 11-member delegation from Kyoto University were invited to give talks in the seminar as well.
Dr. Huey-Jen Jenny Su, Executive Vice President of NCKU, offered greetings from NCKU to the guests and on behalf of NCKU President Hwung-Hweng Hwung to give remarks. She said, “As the benchmarking of the university for NCKU, Kyoto University and all the delegates from your institution have a very special position in our mind.”
“This seminar is likely to be a mutually productive and beneficial event. We hope to facilitate more works in the future and are looking forward to the memorandum to be signed,” Dr. Su noted.
Dr. Yon-Hua Tzeng, Dean of the College of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, NCKU, introduced the scale of the college and said, “We have almost 3,000 students and two third of them are graduate students.”
“In the high-tech industry in Taiwan, the entry level of new employee is master degree. We have nearly 2000 graduate students to show that the research capacity of the college is strong,” Tzeng added.
“We also have a very good relationship with industry in Taiwan,” according to Dr. Tzeng who added that and in the coming months, NCKU and Kyoto University will have a very close collaboration.
Tzeng said, “This seminar has its mission.” Kyoto University would like to recruit students from NCKU and Tzeng responded, “We will encourage our students to join Kyoto University to learn the best knowledge and way of doing research.”
“The first thing we can do here is to set the milestone of student exchange agreement between these two colleges and then we can both sent students to realize the mutual understanding,” according to Dr. Tzeng.
Dr. Toshiyuki Tanaka, the Associate Dean of the Graduate School of Informatics at Kyoto University said that this is his first time to Taiwan and he gave a brief introduction of Kyoto University and Graduate School of Informatics.
“Kyoto University has a very long history among Japanese universities, and actually this is the second oldest university in Japan. One of the most important aspects in our mission is regarding the academic freedom.”
This is the second visit of Kyoto University to NCKU. The first time is in 2011 and this time we expect more and closer partnership with NCKU, according to Dr. Tanaka.
The delegation form Kyoto University includes Tanaka toshiyuki from System Science, Onodera Hidetoshi from Communications and Computer Engineering, Yamamoto Yutaka from Applied Analysis and Complex Dynamical Systems, Nobuhara Shohei from Intelligence Science and Technology, Ma Qiang from Social Informatics, Yoshikawa Hitoshi from Applied Analysis and Complex Dynamical Systems, Tsujimoto Satoshi from Applied Mathematics and Physics, Kawakami Hiroshi from Systems Science, Oba Shigeyuki from Systems Science, Sato Takashi and Takagi Kazuyoshi from Communications and Computer Engineering.
