The awarding ceremony of 13th Li Chung-Shen Foundation Visual Art Award was held at National Cheng Kung University (NCKU), southern Taiwan, March 8, and after the ceremony an exhibition to showcase the work of the awardees opened to the public, according to the university.

The 13th Li Chung-Shen Foundation Visual Art Awards were presented to Chou Tai-Chun (周代焌) and Ying-Yu Lin (林英玉) who were selected by many celebrated artists and art critics in Taiwan from 56 contestants who applied for the one of the most highly esteemed art awards in Taiwan.

A total of 23 pieces of art work including paintings and sculptures created by these two winners are showcased at NCKU Art Center from March 8 to April 8.

In Chou’s works of art "Globe Silent" series challenge from an observer’s perspective the authenticity of the facts surrounding catastrophic events.

Chou's creation attempts to correspond to visual reality with idea creation. He uses the flow of lines and color to express and hint at geological displacement and surface vegetation movement, as a way of alluding to the ease at which Taiwan's landform is able to change.

With complex, vivid compositions and hybrid, mutated humanoid characters, Lin has created an artistic style that incorporates local Taiwanese essence and highly unique personal style.

With his art, which comes from the exploration of irrational forces embedded in his personal subconscious, Lin attempts to confront and subvert the rational hegemony in the contemporary social system.

In his art, bizarre spirituality is transformed into forces of transcendence and salvation. Only through the “release” of conventional perceptions could art reflect the value of “life.”

Li Chung-Shen is known as ""a guru of Chinese modern painting"" in Taiwan’s fine arts circle. Most of active modern artists in Taiwan in the late 20th century were the students of Li Chung-Shen’s.

Li influence lingers on till today as many of those active in the contemporary art community were his pupils or artists who were otherwise inspired by his ideas, or even the pupils of his pupils.

After Li’s death in July 1984, his students set up the Li Chun Shen Foundation of Contemporary Painting in honor of their mentor. Apart from organizing public display of Li’s works and publishing collected works and articles of Li, they also organized the biannual Li Chung-Shen Foundation Visual Art Award.
