A group of 48 French students from Institute Polytechnique des Sciences Avancees (IPSA), France, begins to study at National Cheng Kung University (NCKU), Tainan, Taiwan, for a four-month exchange program.

The Department of Aeronautics and Astronautics (DAA), NCKU, hosted an opening ceremony and orientation today for the new students from France to get to know the campus resources and the program as well.

“This is the third year of the exchange program since the agreement between IPSA and NCKU has signed in 2008,” said Prof. Chieh-Li Chen who is in charge of the program.

He also noted that the program starts from today to June for about 24 hours per week and a total of 344 hours in DAA and NCKU Chinese Language Center. The schedule is tight and students are expected to be focused on the study.

The Chairman of DAA Chin-Hsiang Cheng welcomed the students and provided several reminders for the students to stay safe and sound in Taiwan.

Cheng introduced Taiwan and Tainan to the students and encouraged them to explore the country and enjoy the distinct culture and lifestyle in Tainan.

“However, your study in NCKU especially in DAA will be very tough that implies that you have to study hard and show up to class on time and be prepared,” said Cheng.

In addition to lectures, the students will also participate in field trips in Tainan and visit Ali Mountain to explore Taiwanese culture.

Elodie Dubrevie from IPSA Toulouse had arrived NCKU two days ago and she said that this is her first time in Taiwan and she never visited Asia before so the culture shock is expected to be strong.

“I chose to come to Taiwan because I want to know more about the culture,” said Dubrevie who also mentioned that people who visited NCKU before told her a lot about their stay.

Anthony le Movellic is a French student who shows a keen interest in Chinese learning. He said he has a Chinese name called “吳天” and he is expecting to improve his Chinese language skills during his stay in NCKU.

“I’d like to discover Taiwanese culture since I never been to Taiwan before. In 2010, I met a friend from Taiwan who spent one year in France with my family so I want to know more about the country,” added Movellic.
