NCKU launches medical device alliance to boost academia-industry collaboration
Tainan, Taiwan, February 18, 2014
National Cheng Kung University (NCKU) hosted a forum on medical device alliance recently with about 200 experts attended to share their knowledge and experience with a view to boost academia-industry collaboration in Taiwan.
The Cheng Kung Medical Device Alliance Exchange Forum, jointly organized by the NCKU Medical Device Innovation Center (NCKU MDIC) and National Science Council (NSC), took place at Hotel Tainan on January 20.
The forum welcomed and gathered many from both the academia and industry to interact and exchange ideas with each other, thus boosting collaboration opportunities between both parties while and creating a new foundation for the development of medical device in Taiwan.
Attended by NCKU Vice President Chih-Chin Ho, Tainan City Deputy Mayor Chun-Tso Yen, Taiwan Medical and Biotech Industry Association (TMBIA) Chairman Dr. Michael Kuo and many others, the forum has successfully gathered approximately 200 participants consisting of firms such as Hiwin Technologies Corporation and Hermes Microvision (HMI) as well as NCKU professors and physicians to exchange research outcomes and industrial needs.
“NCKU’s outstanding performance in academia-industry collaboration has placed the university alongside John Hopkins University and Duke University,” NCKU Vice President said.
“As the leader in the local academia-industry collaboration arena, NCKU strongly supports Tainan City Government’s development plans while integrating resources from the Southern Taiwan Science Park (STSP), Taiwan Technology Industrial Park (TTIP) and other high technology industrial park to accelerate the development of the medical device industry.”
Ho added, with the upper hand of having ready-made academic units including College of Engineering, College of Medicine, College of Management and Medical Center at NCKU, the NCKU Medical Device Innovation Center will merge the Cheng Kung Medical Device Alliance, the NCKU Medical Device Innovation Alliance and 80 over medical device manufacturers to form a brand new “Medical Device Global Academia-Industry Alliance” in order to integrate resources and capability from both the academia and industry, thus making great contributions to the development and innovation of medical devices in Taiwan.
“NCKU is not only Tainan City Government’s vital think-tank, but also a valuable, well-respected think-tank of the entire Taiwan,” noted Tainan City Deputy Mayor Chun-Tso Yen.
He also said, as improving the health care quality requires good quality medical devices, NCKU can lead the development of Taiwan’s medical device industry and create a new benchmark in the academia.
TMBIA Chairman Dr. Michael Kuo emphasized that as Taiwan has an excellent environment for developing medical devices, NCKU’s active promotion of medical device innovation and integration of resources to focus on the development of the medical device industry will help upgrade and elevate the Taiwanese medical device industry on the global stage.
The NCKU MDIC has created a strong foundation at international level by establishing academic links and exchanges all over the world, especially in emerging countries such as Southeast Asian countries, Russia, India and so on.
For instance, NCKU MDIC Director Dr. Fong-Chin Su led a delegation, comprising NCKU and three Taiwanese firms, namely Codent Technology, Taiwan CareTech Corporation and 4G Technology Company, to Malaysia to establish collaboration mechanism with Malaysia’s top university, University of Malaya.
“Establishing collaboration with Malaysia allows us to quickly enter into the Southeast Asian market and also helps connect us to other Muslim countries,” Su said.
He also added that the collaboration not only can help Taiwanese firms build their roots in the local dental equipment industry, but also can help Taiwanese firms enter into Southeast Asian markets, thus increasing the global competitiveness of the Taiwanese medical device industry.
In addition, NCKU also undertakes NSC’s project to offer opportunities for collaboration and interaction in medical device technology among medical device manufacturers, NCKU researchers and clinical physicians.
Consisting of 31 professors, physicians and researchers from the industry, the alliance project aims to tailor make technical guidance and counseling which are compliant with industry’s needs and requirements in order to enhance research and development output of the industry in terms of technology and clinical requirements.
