NCKU officiates the Ocean Engineering new building
Tainan, Taiwan, January 9, 2014
National Cheng Kung University (NCKU) hosted the ground-breaking ceremony of the construction of the new NCKU Ocean Engineering Building on Tuesday. The completion of the new building is scheduled in September 2015, according to the university.
Located at the corner of intersection between Xiaodong Road and Changrong Road, Tainan City, the ground-breaking ceremony of the new building was hosted by NCKU President Hwung-Hweng Hwung with attendees including NCKU Secretary General Chin-Cheng Chen, NCKU Office of General Affairs Director Cheng-Liang Huang, NCKU Department of Hydraulic and Ocean Engineering (NCKU HYD) Director Nai-Fang Chou and other professors from the department, as well as Team Architects Partnership (TAP-ARCH) architects and so on.
“The construction of this new Ocean Engineering Building will induce another wave of development at NCKU,” President Hwung explained.
He noted that with NCKU College of Engineering ranked 14th globally, the university is relying on its own Department of Hydraulic and Ocean Engineering, which facilities are ranked top 3 globally, to play the role of leading the university to greater success.
He also emphasized the boundless prospect of the research capability and facilities of NCKU HYD, which is expected to achieve major breakthroughs and innovation within the next decade.
According to President Hwung, the new Ocean Engineering Building is actually a reconstruction of the old laboratory building of the department and will accommodate Institute of Ocean Technology and Marine Affair (IOTMA), NCKU HYD, NCKU Disaster Prevention Research Center (DPRC), Hydro-Science and Technology Research Center (HSTRC) and so on.
President Hwung revealed that the integration of all research centers and institutes under this new building will lead to the formation of a first-grade integrated research center, thus building research capability for the benefit of mankind.
NCKU HYD Director Dr. Nai-Fang Chou said, “The completion of the new Ocean Engineering Building will serve to overcome the problem of inadequate space for IOTMA, which was established in 2006, DPRC, HSTRC and others, as well as improve fundamental facilities for teaching and research to enhance quality of teaching and research, and meet the industry needs.
“The concept of the building design is based on the spirit of NCKU HYD, which is taken from the saying, ‘the highest goodness is like water. Water benefits all things and does not compete’,” explained Kai-Yi Tseng, TAP-ARCH architect who was involved in this reconstruction project.
The building design attempts to illustrate a big ship, ocean waves and sunlight while keeping intact the surroundings of the old laboratory, including the large Terminalia tree in front of it.
Most importantly, the new building will be an environmental-friendly building where all the used water in each laboratory will be recycled for further use, with no wastage involved.
Based on the design of big ship, the new Ocean Engineering Department will cover a land area of 183,176 m2, consisting of two underground levels and five levels above ground.
