Institute of Chinese Disaster Prevention general assembly kicks off at NCKU - CNA

The Institute of Chinese Disaster Prevention hosted its annual general assembly and 2013 symposium on disaster prevention at the Department of Hydraulic and Ocean Engineering of National Cheng Kung University (NCKU), southern Taiwan, on December 20.

Celebrating its establishment for 15 years, the Institute of Chinese Disaster Prevention has played a crucial role as one of the main institutions for disaster prevention and mitigation in Taiwan, according to the university.

Aside from the members of the institute, a number of scholars and experts were invited to give a talk on the related topics, exploring issues on environmental protection, and hazard management at the symposium.

NCKU Professor Chyan-Deng Jan noted, another important mission of the general assembly is to call for the awareness of disaster prevention among the general public.

Prof. Jan who is also the Chairman and Publication Committee from the Institute of Chinese Disaster Prevention, revealed that given the topography of Taiwan, which is covered by slope-lands and high mountains, landslides and debris flows often were triggered after heavy rainfall.

He also said, to better serve his country he decided to set up the Institute of Chinese Disaster Prevention 15 years ago with the help of a group of experts in Taiwan.

The mission of the institute is to assist the government in carrying out academic researches, technology exchanges and educational events regarding disaster prevention, according to Prof. Jan.

In the past 15 years, the institute has hosted numerous conferences, workshops and campaigns on regular basis and also participated in many international exchanges on disaster prevention technology, exploration of disaster prevention system, promotion of disaster prevention practice and so on.

NCKU Emeritus Professor Shan-Hwei Ou gave his remark and commented, “Natural disasters and human hazards are frequently happened in Taiwan. To decrease the occurrence of disasters, the attention and involvement from the public are necessarily important.”

He said that he is expecting the organization and people involvement will extend in the future and effectively avoid the potential adverse impacts through action taken in advance.

A number of awards including Disaster Prevention Excellence Award and Student Paper Competition Award were presented in the general assembly.
