National Cheng Kung University (NCKU) organized the “2013 NCKU Scholarship for Admission of Distinguished High School Students” award ceremony on December 23 at the NCKU International Conference Hall.

Given out on an annual basis, the award aims to encourage distinguished high school students to pursue their undergraduate degrees at NCKU, according to the university.

Hosted by NCKU President Hwung-Hweng Hwung, the ceremony has witnessed the presentation of the scholarship awards to a total of 68 distinguished high school students.

Every award recipient will receive a scholarship worth NTD50,000.

Since it was founded in 1998, the “NCKU Scholarship for Admission of Distinguished High School Students” award ceremony has attracted the attention of both students and parents.

During the ceremony President Hwung has given six recommendations while congratulating all the scholarship award recipients.

“First, you have to refine your learning attitude. University life is the time when you grow to become adults, when ideas and values grow, when you have to set your own goals and have your own way of thinking.”

“Second, you have to know how to play too because merely knowing how to study is not enough,” President Hwung adding that both studying and playing hard are equally important.

The third recommendation is related to studying technique and time management. He said, “Apart from listening attentively to lectures, a student should write down notes and read reference books on topics not taught in the class. At the same time, one should also know how to make priorities and manage his or her own time.”

Fourth, President Hwung advised students to monitor and keep up with their own interests because interest is an important part of their entire life, where they would have to work for over 40 years after graduation. He added that having a suitable interest would enable a person to play to his or her strengths.

“It is also important to have good habits,” President Hwung emphasized while revealing the long-lasting impact of having good habits.

Lastly, President Hwung advised students to maintain a happy and positive mood at all times and know how to communicate calmly with parents, students and teachers alike.

He also pinpointed that success is 80% emotional quotient (EQ) and 20% intelligence quotient (IQ), thus demonstrating the importance of maintaining a happy and positive mood.

NCKU medical undergraduate student Shih-Han Huang, who is one of the scholarship recipient, revealed that she chose NCKU initially because of her parents who dated in the campus; however, after studying there for a while, she began to appreciate the beauty of the university demonstrated through not only the architecture and surroundings of the university, but also the excellent NCKU teaching staff and her wonderful classmates.

Another recipient of the NCKU scholarship, NCKU physics undergraduate student Shin-Yeh Wu praised the large number of exceptional talents in NCKU, prompting him to work even harder and cherish the study opportunity given to him by NCKU even more.

The “2013 NCKU Scholarship for Admission of Distinguished High School Students” is awarded to three categories of high school students; high achievers in university entrance examination, high achievers in non-examination channel, and students with full grades in academic ability tests.
