Groundbreaking ceremony for NCKU Biotechnology Teaching Building - Noodls

fThe groundbreaking ceremony of theThe construction of National Cheng Kung University's (NCKU) Biotechnology Teaching Building which has began on December 28 is expected to be complete and ready for use in 2016, according to the Department of Life Sciences of NCKU.
The department will integrate the southern branch of the Academia Sinica's Biotechnology Center with the neighboring Southern Taiwan Science Park and the Orchid Biotechnology Park to facilitate the construction of a unique interdisciplinary research institute. The groundbreaking ceremony of the Biotechnology Teaching Building was presided over by NCKU President Hwung-Hweng Hwung, with the attendance of the Tainan City Mayor William Lai, in celebration, along with staff and students of the Department of Life Science of NCKU.
Hao-Jen Huang, Chair of the Department of Life Science; Tzong-Yueh Chen, Chairperson of the Institute of Biotechnology, NCKU; Jing-Huang Liu, the Chairman of the Institute of Tropical Plant Sciences, NCKU, were also to be found at the grand ceremony.
"The Department of Life Sciences is NCKU's youngest college", says President Huang, "and its importance is in coordinating with the basic research of the Department of Medicine. The Department of Life Sciences is the most dynamic, and also receives the most profit, and the institute has very important researchers and achievements."
"Dean Chu-Fang Lo is a sterling example," Huang continues. "She made great contributions to the domestic shrimp farming industry, resigned from the National Taiwan University (NTU) faculty this August to take up a post at NCKU, and also hopes to make greater contributions to the southern shrimp farming industry."
The President also adds that "Chairperson Tzong-Yueh Chen and Director Huey-Lang Yang's achievements in the nursing and farming of groupers are also extraordinary, and Professor Hong-Hwa Chen's tropical orchid breeding is also of great contribution."
President Huang says that the future development of the NCKU Department of Life Sciences will cooperate with the southern branch of the Academia Sinica, which brings southern archaeology, agricultural biotechnology, optoelectronics, information, and precise instruments in terms of resources.
NCKU also hopes to jointly promote the southern produce industry through academic research, and this collaboration also depends on the achievements of the Tainan City Government.
"In every six Phalaenopsis across the world, there is one that was cultivated by the farmers in Tainan", says Lai who added that Tainan is rich in agricultural and fishing industries, which is in need of the NCKU biotechnology to assist.
