National Cheng Kung University (NCKU), southern Taiwan, is hosting the 5th PCGMR (Promotion Center for Global Materials Research)-NCKU Symposium, December 11 to 13, with a total of 65 international scholars in the field of material sciences from 11 countries including Japan, Korea, Israel, USA, India and China.

At the opening ceremony today, the head of the PCGMR Dr. Masahiro Yoshimura said, “The 5th PCGMR-NCKU Symposium is the biggest one ever since the experts we have invited to give talks are very high-level scholars and recognized by international academic community.”

He also revealed that the topic of this years’ symposium is Nano-Technology and Nano-Materials for Energy, Electronics and Others. “We mainly explore the application of nano-particle, nano-film, and nano-structure to the electronics and energy.”

“With the advance of the nano-technology, now people are interested in carbon, grapheme, energy-related research like battery, and solar cell which are all included in the symposium,” according to Dr. Yoshimura who is also a distinguished professor from NCKU Department of Materials Science and Engineering (MSE).

The plenary speakers include Morinobu Endo from Shinshu University, Japan, Kenji Uchino from the Pennsylvania State Univ. & Office Naval Res., USA, and Jin-Ho Choy from Ewha Womans University, Korea.

NCKU College of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science Dean Yon-Hua Tzeng on behalf of President Hwung-Hwung Hwung welcomed the guests and expressed his gratitude to Dr. Yoshimura for promoting PCGMR-NCKU.

He said that material research and industry spanning from energy to semi-conductor are very well-developed in Taiwan. Even though Taiwan has very little natural resources, Taiwanese and researchers from the world have made a great effort to convert limited resources to useful products.

NCKU MSE Chairman Tyh-Ming Ting who is also the coordinator of the center said, “PCGMR was established in July 2011 and will function till the end of 2014.”

The aim of this center is promoting academic excellence and developing world class research center to upgrade the global status of NCKU via Materials Science and Engineering,” according to Ting.

PCGMR conducts mainly study and research innovative materials and their designing, processing and properties, educate global level researchers having presentation and communication skills, help the international cooperative work inmaterials research and buildup global level materials consortium among world class universities and institutions.

Dr. Yoshimura also revealed, “For me, one of the purposes of the meeting today is to buildup human-link or human-bridging which I believe can be transferred to next generation of people.”

PCGMR is headed by Prof. Masahiro Yoshimura, who is one of ISI Highly cited Researchers with total citations >12,000 and h-index: 54, and has leadership in international societies such as a senate (advisory board) member in International Union of Materials Research Societies (IUMRS), the founding president of International Solvothermal and Hydrothermal Association (ISHA), and the president of International Advisory Board Committee in World Academy of Ceramics (WAC).
