The National Cheng Kung University (NCKU) Art Center has opened an exhibition of young artists whose work is inspired by the impression and experience they acquired from the southern Taiwan, the university revealed.

A total of 29 pieces of art work by 9 young artists have exhibited at “South Realm – the Young Artists Exhibit” which featured oil painting, watercolor, photography, ink and mixed media.

Another exciting feature of the exhibition is that the students from NCKU Institute of Art Studies serve as the docents to brief to the audience the stories of the art work.

The students are trained by Prof. Yi-Fang Wu who is in charge of the course called “Seminar on the Critical History of Western Art” and she claims that leading the students who take the course to curate the exhibition is an experiment.

“Students have a great opportunity to apply what they have learned in the class, try to analyze the work, interview the artists and then introduce the work to the general audience,” Wu said.

She also said, the students are required to write a short essay to introduce the artist and the work as well.

Wu explained that the exhibition themed as South Realm which is not confined to the geographical south of Taiwan, but covers the relative, the imagery, and the conceptual realm of south.

The notion underlying the exhibition is not necessarily defined as specific span of time or culture with geographical significance, but reinterpreted as anything possible to be related to the idea of “South” through heterogeneous sources.

“South Realm – the Young Artists Exhibit” will run through January 5, 2014 with a salon hosted by Wu to give a talk on the exhibition.
