Tainan, Taiwan, November 28, 2013

National Cheng Kung University (NCKU), southern Taiwan, recently has unveiled a new orchid breed called I-Shin Venus which has made its grand debut at 2013 NCKU anniversary orchid show.

I-Shin Venus, the new breed of Phalaenopsis, is crowned for its sweet aroma and elegant figure, not only is it the perfect decoration for home life, it is also the most important plant in pioneering orchid biotechnology products.

Hong-Hwa Chen, Project Director of the Orchid Biotechnology Industry-University Alliance and the NCKU Research Center Director, says that “Taiwan’s reputation of orchid breeding and research is acknowledged worldwide, and is the product of countless peoples’ hard work.”

This year’s orchid show is based on the theme of ‘Life-Zen’, and includes elements of the orchid show, presentation of new species, potted orchids contest, tea ceremony, exhibit of the Lady’s Slipper Orchid, orchid merchandise, as well as orchid industry forums.

Though the Creator created 25,000 types of orchids on Earth, orchid breeders have worked tirelessly over 100 years in order to fulfill their ideals, to create a variety of 100,000 kinds of colorful orchids, according to Chen.

The highlight of this year’s orchid show is the presentation the ‘P. I-Shin Venus’, a new variety made by crossing the P. bellina – known for its sweet aroma – with the multi-flowered P. equestris.

The new breed is the fruit of 35 years of labor from Mr. Ching-Hsian Jian of the I-Hsin Biotechnology Inc., and is a perfect product that encompasses the soft beauty of the P. equestris and the elegant aroma of the P. bellina.

The birth of Venus not only showcases the efforts and determination of orchid breeders, it also brings more hope and founds a niche for orchid biotech products. Already, biotech products based upon the Venus are in active development.

To celebrate its anniversary, NCKU also held an Orchid Biotechnology Industry-University Alliance’s member exchange and results presentation.

Through the affiliated efforts of the Orchid Biotechnology Industry-University Alliance, the event recreates orchid life and - via the combined use of floriculture, video, and narrative descriptions – redefines the value of orchids, emphasizing its significance in not only marketing, but also its integration into our lives to generate additional value, and to promote the industry of tourism.

The dean of the NCKU College of Life Science, Zhu-Fang Luo, was impressed by the orchids, commenting that, stepping into the orchid exhibition, one is “immediately calmed”; this is the epitome of the concept of Zen in life.

She also said that the orchid show was the most beautiful and impressive exhibition of the series of NCKU Anniversary Celebration events, expressing her hopes that more people can come together and experience the power of the orchids.

In addition, the NCKU Orchid Research Centre will host a ‘Sustainable development of Taiwan orchid industry’ forum on the afternoon of the NCKU anniversary on November 11.
