NCKU Fire Prevention Technology Building officially opens to enhance academia-industry collaboration
The Fire Prevention Technology Building had constructed by National Cheng Kung University (NCKU), southern Taiwan, and a ceremony marking its official launch was hosted by NCKU President Hwung-Hweng Hwung on November 12.
Started since June 9, 2010 by the NCKU Fire Protection Laboratory, Fire Protection and Safety Research Center (FPSRC), the building was constructed using their own funds totaling NTD100 million for academic purposes.
“The NCKU FPSRC Center is a successful role model of academia-industry collaboration,” Hwung said.
According to Hwung, Dr. Ping-Lin Kuo, who was then a professor at the NCKU Department of Chemical Engineering, founded the research center in 1995 through a NTD12 million loan from the NCKU Research and Development Foundation (NRDF) with him as the guarantor.
He also said, Kuo’s ambitions and courage has ensured the successful operations of the research center, leading it to the top position in the domestic fire prevention sector.
Kuo who is also the director of NCKU FPSRC noted that the new building, which is equipped with state-of-the-art research facilities and equipment, will focus on professional testing and academia-industry collaboration.
Future plans for the building include research and manufacturing of lithium battery as well as developing more chemistry-related tests, with the aim of upgrading the industry and benefitting the community, according to Kuo.
The Fire Prevention Technology Building consists of seven floors with a floor area of 5544 square meters, costing approximately NTD100 million.
The center has also built competitive and collaborative relationships with domestic construction institutes, like Taiwan Bureau of Standards, Metrology and Inspection (BSMI) and others, thus stimulating academia-industry collaborations and turning the center into a successful academia-industry research center.
Kuo revealed that the center will integrate related industries and use the research capability of the academia to assist industry, thus ensuring Taiwan be on par with the world.
“The newly built Fire Prevention Technology Building can serve as a demonstration platform for the integration of academic technology into industrial products…,” Kuo further explained. “… thus leading NCKU to become Taiwan’s version of the world famous research university, Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in the future.”
Serving as an experiment and research-based infrastructure focusing on academia-industry collaborations, the building was constructed using savings resulted from collaborations between the industry and FPSRC.
Such funding method is considered rare amongst most academic units in Taiwan, thus setting FPSRC as the best role model in this context.
The building not only provides space for research, test and analysis laboratories, but also for laboratories used for academia-industry collaboration purposes.
Based on the concept of sustainable management, some of the readily available laboratories include lithium battery manufacturing and testing laboratory and chemical testing laboratory.
In the future, the field of research will be extended to cover fireproof materials, hardware testing and other fire prevention-related fields based on technological development and needs of the society.
