NCKU announces winners of K.T. Li Technology and Literature Lectureship awards

The four winners of the K.T. Li Technology and Literature Lectureship awards had expressed their utmost honor and gratitude to Delta Electronics Chairman Mr. Bruce Cheng and National Cheng Kung University (NCKU) President Hwung-Hweng Hwung for giving such opportunity and support to researchers at NCKU.
The K.T. Li Technology and Literature Lectureship awards were officially presented to its winners at NCKU Library Meeting Room, November 9.
Presented by NCKU President Hwung and Delta Electronics Chairman Cheng, the winners included NCKU Department of Environmental Engineering Chair Professor Dr. Paul Hung-Po Wang for the Honorary Scholar award, NCKU Department of Computer Science and Information Engineering Associate Professor Dr. Tsung-Yi Ho and NCKU Department of Earth Science Associate Professor Dr. Chien-Hung Lin for the Research Awards, as well as NCKU College of Medicine Chair Professor Dr. Ming-Shi Chang for the Gold Award.
The K.T. Li Technology and Literature Lectureship was established by the founder and Honorary Chairman of Delta Electronics Bruce Cheng through his personal donation worth one million shares of Delta Electronics stocks, revealed Hwung.
Hwung also expressed his gratitude to Cheng for donating stocks of his company and using stock dividends as rewards to commemorate the achievements of researchers at NCKU. Such measure, he said, “fulfills the concept of sustainable development.”
Cheng congratulated all the award winners and expressed his gratitude to NCKU for their attention and efforts in this lectureship.
“The K.T. Li Technology and Literature Lectureship has already been established for 12 years,” Cheng said. “Its main aim is to reward researchers with great innovations in science and humanities research.”
In the past 12 years, a total of 14 outstanding academicians have been awarded lectureship, 19 outstanding professors were given the Honorary Scholar awards while 42 scholars has received the Gold Award.
Cheng added that the success of Delta Electronics in the past 43 years is incomparable to the achievements by Kwoh-Ting Li and Yun-San Sun as they were both people with great vision and wisdom. Without their leadership and contributions, Taiwan would not have reached the level of development today, he added.
“From media’s point of view, Taiwan looks messy and terrible,” Mr. Cheng noted. “However, many of my foreign friends have learned from the passion, friendliness and harmony demonstrated by Taiwanese, thus viewing Taiwan as a wonderful society.”
He hopes to learn about Taiwan from other people’s point of view and wishes for the continuous development and improvement of the nation and her people.
This year’s Honorary Scholar winner, Dr. Hung-Po Paul Wang from the NCKU Department of Environmental Engineering, has been engaging in research related to molecular environmental science using synchrotron radiation on the molecular structural analysis of complex or nano-samples, as well as the consultation on the construction of next generation synchrotron radiation.
Involved in the development of techniques for immediate detection and removal of toxic organic pollutants, Dr. Wang has also developed the biomass CSS technique while establishing collaborative research with the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory and University of Utah.
This year’s Research Award went to Dr. Tsung-Yi Ho from the NCKU Department of Computer Science and Information Engineering, whose research focuses on biochip design automation, especially digital microfluidic biochips. Dr. Ho has also opened up a new research direction in chip level automation, allowing for comprehensive consideration and optimization of power dissipation in digital microfluidic biochips.
Also receiving the Research Award was Dr. Chien-Hung Lin, who mainly studies the Earth’s upper atmosphere and space environment. Since started his teaching career at NCKU in 2008, he primarily focuses on the effect of ionosphere on weather, the lower atmosphere-space weather coupling, the effect of acoustic gravity waves generated by earthquakes and tsunamis on the upper atmosphere and other related research.
NCKU College of Medicine Chair Professor Dr. Ming-Shi Chang was given the Gold Award for her long term work in the development of new drugs. She carries out research on immune disorders such as autoimmunity, osteoporosis and cancer-related diseases.
She is also actively involved in the development of new drugs, especially the Interleukin-20 (IL-20) monoclonal antibody, which has been proven in clinical trials on animals to treat rheumatoid arthritis and osteoporosis, thus making huge contributions to the medical field.
This research has been transferred to European-based Novo Nordisk for a fee of NTD400 million, rewriting the highest record for technology transfer in Taiwan’s academia.
