SATU Presidents discuss online education and green campus at 2013 meeting
Tainan, Taiwan, October 29, 2013
The Presidents’ Forum of Southeast and South Asia and Taiwan Universities (SATU Presidents’ Forum) was held at the International Conference Hall, National Cheng Kung University (NCKU) Oct. 27-28.
Approximately 17 university presidents or representatives from 9 countries attended the conference, in which the issues on online learning projects and green university were discussed respectively.
Dr. Huey-Jen Jenny Su, NCKU Executive Vice President, on behalf of NCKU President Dr. Hwung-Hweng Hwung welcomed the presidents and representatives of the participating universities to join the significant event.
Later, President Hwung, in his capacity as chairman of SATU Presidents’ Forum, gave his remarks, “SATU Presidents’ Forum now with over 137 member schools in 9 countries, was originally established in 2003 for the advancement of the quality of higher education in the region.”
Since the formation of SATU Presidents’ Forum in 2003, NCKU as the Forum’s International Secretariat has been striving to ensure that we remain at the forefront of international higher-education organizations and for universities within this region to share their valuable experiences in further enhancing higher education and facilitating international mobility and cooperation, according to President Hwung.
He added, the SATU Presidents’ Forum has been utilized to contend with the economic, social, political, and educational structures, as well as the challenges of globalization.
We are in a transitional world right now, President Hwung said, and the nature of information distribution is changing rapidly, enabling us to reflect on pressing global issues through digital manners which was not otherwise possible before.
The recent development of Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) which has begun to transform higher education by providing an interactive online community for the students, professors was introduced at the committee meeting, October 27.
The keynote sessions centralizing on Sustainable Eco Campus Initiatives, in which Prof. Awangku Hassanal Bahar Pg Bagul, Director of the EcoCampus Management Centre at Universiti of Malaysia Sabah and Prof. Ching-Chang Lee, Director of NCKU Center for Environmental Protection, Safety and Health, NCKU, have shared the experiences of the two schools.
In the Steering Committee Meeting, NCKU as the International Secretariat had reported about the activities this year and the theme for 2014 SATU General Assembly was decided.
