National Cheng Kung University (NCKU), southern Taiwan, will set up a total of 29 Automatic External Defibrillators (AED) in various locations across campus to facilitate a safer environment for people in the neighborhoods, the university revealed.

Currently, the university has assembled 9 AEDs at the locations where crowds of students will form, including the dorms, the auditorium, and the NCKU museum and 20 more units will be set up around the campus soon to prevent incidents from happening.

Dr. Ching-Chang Lee, Director of Center for Environmental Protection, Safety and Health, NCKU, said that the advent of safe and easy-to-use AEDs makes it possible to extend the use of AEDs to people with little or no medical background.

He explained, an AED is a small, portable, and easy-to-use device that assesses the heart of a person in cardiac arrest for a shockable rhythm. If such a rhythm is detected, the provider is instructed to press a button to deliver a shock or series of shocks to
the victim’s heart, stopping the heart to allow it to return to a normal rhythm.

People who had just gone into sudden cardiac arrest is most likely in urgent need of defibrillation and a metered electrical charge can often restore the heart to healthy function and save a life.

To provide a realistic chance of survival, defibrillation must be available soon after cardiac arrest, according to Lee.

Since June, a total of 9 AEDs had been set up , respectively, at places where students will gather, such as the dorms, Kuang-Fu Sports Field, the NCKU museum, the Green Magic School NCKU, and also in the campus police’s patrol cars.

Before January 2014, the university will finish the locations of the 29 AEDs across campus.

An AED training program in 4 phases is going to be carried out soon, according to Lee who is hoping that over 70% staff in the university is capable of using an AED.
