Large crowd flocks to NCKU used book sales for charity - Noodls
Tainan, Taiwan, October 2, 2013
National Cheng Kung University (NCKU), southern Taiwan, hosts its annual used books sale for charity which will last for five days starting from September 30, offering more than 6,500 books.
Book lovers from the neighborhood of NCKU have flocked to the university's library since the early morning of the launch day, searching for books that they'd like to bring home.
All the proceeds received from this sale will be donated to St. Theresa Opportunity Center to help babies and kids having developmental delays, according to the university.
"The most important aim of the charity sale is to upgrade the library's role of merely serving the readers to contributing to public welfare, thus urging the public to do charity for the society," said NCKU Library Director Dr. Ruey-Jen Yang, who initiated the opening ceremony of the charity event.
According to Dr. Yang, the used books sale was first organized in 2004, where only 109 readers have contributed more than 1,000 used books and NTD$65,000 worth of proceeds were collected that year.
The charity-oriented initiative has then gradually attracted interests from readers all over Tainan City, with proceeds reaching more than NTD170,000 in last year's sale event.
This year, approximately 350 enthusiastic readers have participated in this event, resulting in the collection of more than 6,500 used books which were sorted and arranged by staff from the NCKU Library Circulation and Public Service Division during their spare time.
The Director of St. Theresa Opportunity Center Mei-Hua Yang expressed her gratitude on behalf of all the kids at the center to all the readers for their heart-warming good deeds and to NCKU Library for their concerted effort to organize this charity event.
It is hoped that the proceeds collected from this event would provide funds to launch the construction of the center's new building, thus providing children at St. Theresa better space for activities and learning, said Yang.
The used books collected this year range from academic to arts and history, demonstrating a large variety of books in different fields. These used books after sorting and rearranging were found to be in good condition and were priced between NTD20 and NTD400.
Liao, a senior student at the Department of Earth Sciences, was found carrying a stack of books related to arts and putting them at the cashier before returning to search for even more books. He said that as a first-timer for this sale event, he did not expect to return with lots of good books at an "impossibly" good price. He also noted that the condition of these books were no different from new books, thus he enjoyed shopping for books during the event.
To maintain the tradition of organizing the used books sale, NCKU Library started the planning, promoting by preparing posters and collecting used books for this event in June.
The collected books had to undergo a strict selection process before the sorting and pricing processes. Event staff also has to sacrifice their off-day to decorate the venue on the eve of the event, thus demonstrating the long and tedious process of organizing this meaningful charity event.
To ensure that every book is put into good use, the NCKU Library has organized this scholarly event which has great significance to the environment and public welfare since 2004.
After 9 years, a total of 1,347 people within NCKU and outside the university have donated approximately 25,000 used books, collecting proceeds worth more than NTD1.18 million.
In recent years, the proceeds from this event have been donated to Genesis Social Welfare Foundation Tainan Branch, Tainan Fund for Children and Family, St. Raphael Opportunity Center and St. Theresa Opportunity Center with great outcome.
