NCKU to launch a multidisciplinary Master's program in nano integrated circuit engineering

Tainan, Taiwan, September 27, 2013

The College of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science (NCKU EECS) at National Cheng Kung University (NCKU), southern Taiwan, will launch a Master degree program in nano integrated circuit (IC) engineering, according to the university.

Supported by Taiwan-based semiconductor companies including Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) and United Microelectronics Corporation (UMC), the program will begin to admit students for the 2014 academic year.

The companies have offered qualified students the opportunity to apply for scholarships, pre-graduation employment, and summer internship.

A number of scholarships such as NT$ 120,000 per semester are provided. Some industry sponsored scholarship might be subjected to conditions set by each individual company, according to EECS.

The program aims to nurture high-level R&D personnel in the field of advanced technologies in order to fulfill job market needs, thus strengthening Taiwan's semiconductor and IC industry in the coming decades, according to Dr. Yon-Hua Tseng, Dean of NCKU EECS.

The design of the program has took account in the technology required for continuing the sustainability of the world's top nano IC industry in Taiwan, Tseng added, "The comprehensive program consists of a series of fundamental, advanced and professional courses, integrating knowledge on nanoelectronic components, their principles and manufacturing processes."

"This program hopes to enhance professional R&D and innovative skills, thus nurturing future leaders of the semiconductor industry," explained Tseng.

Recruitment of top quality teaching staff and students has already begun, where the selection of students will go through review by the industry.

Having a highly integrated complete industry chain, Taiwan's semiconductor IC industry consists of upstream, midstream and downstream sectors which focus on IC design, wafer fabrication, packaging, testing and application, thus playing a vital role at the global level.

Rapid development and advancements in telecommunications, cloud computing and others in recent years have increased demands for various types of IC components. In addition, Taiwan's highly competitive IC industry has also attracted continuous influx of orders, prompting Taiwanese semiconductor foundries located at the Southern Taiwan Science Park (STSP) to expand their plants.

This scenario results in the sudden increase in demand for related professional personnel, which could not be met by graduates nurtured by major universities in the country.

The rapid development of semiconductor technology has prompted outstanding scientists and engineering professors to develop innovative and cost-effective nanoelectronic components and processes.

With its advantage of being located closest to STSP and highly favored by the industry for its ability to nurture talented personnel, the NCKU EECS is the first to be offered assistance and collaboration opportunity by the wafer manufacturing industry.

Moreover, approval of this Master's degree program has been granted by the Ministry of Education (MOE), Taiwan, thus enabling new student admission for the coming 2014 academic year.

According to Tseng, the program is greatly supported by TSMC which has established collaborative plans to set up a joint R&D center, UMC which will offer research funding to teaching staff and students, scholarship opportunities as well as domestic and foreign internship opportunities, and Macronix which will sponsor the recruitment of Chair Professor to provide opportunities to enrolled students to learn the most advanced technology.

Such provisions and support by the industry will ensure the close proximity of R&D to meet industry meets and fill gaps between research and industry with the expectation that graduates will join the R&D of nano IC industry for industry applications, thus enhance the sustainability and continuous development of this industry in Taiwan.
