NCKU art historian launches new book on Taiwan traditional arts
Tainan, Taiwan, September 18, 2013
A new book collected traditional paintings in Taiwan was launched by Dr. Chong-ray Hsiao, a professor in the Department of History at National Cheng Kung University (NCKU), southern Taiwan, and Qing-Zhang Liao, a promising artist was introduced at the book launch host by the university, recently.
“Tainan, the ancient capital of Taiwan, is regarded as the birthplace of Taiwan traditional culture which is the most important resources for cultural innovation,” according to Hsiao who is a distinguished art historian specialized in Taiwanese art history and modern Chinese art history.
Hsiao revealed that this book intends both to celebrate Liao’s outstanding achievement and to call for appreciation and concern for traditional arts.
“Liao’s combination of the traditional and the innovative will certainly become the milestone for the prospect of traditional painting in Taiwan,” Hsiao said.
He also said, the traditional painting of the Han Chinese has a prominent history in Tainan, giving rise to masters including Pan Chun-Yuan, Chen Yu-Feng, Pan Li-Shui, Cai Cao-Ru, and Chen Shou-Yi.
Liao’s outstanding performance had drawn great attention among the art historians like Dr. Hsiao who introduced Liao’s masterpieces to the art world in Taiwan and published a book to introduce the collection of his paintings which is the first volume of “The Complete Works of Taiwan Traditional Arts.”
Hsiao introduced Liao at the book launch and said, “Liao studied traditional painting under Ding Qing-Shi, whose father Ding Wang was a student of Pang Chun-Yuan and a contemporary to Pang Li-Shui, has made Liao one of the brilliant stars of traditional painting in Taiwan.”
Liao’s genius in arts has been revealed and praised as early as when he worked on temple paintings.
To probe further into landscape painting, Liao enrolled in a university, and, not long after he earned a degree from the university, won the Award of Merit in Tainan Fine Arts Exhibition in 1994.
Liao had awarded the First Prize in the Tainan Annual Traditional Crafts Exhibition in 2000.
Hsiao pointed out that Liao distances himself from the market and commercialism of temple painting to pursue his art career, and his solitary perseverance has yielded amazing results for him.
