NCKU hosts 2013 low carbon transport forum to look into city transport - Nodls
Tainan, Taiwan, September 14, 2013
"With the global population glowing, most of the people living in smaller cities and smaller cities like Tainan can be areas of experimentation to show the creative way of transport," when referring to his projects in Taiwan, the founder of Car Free Day Dr. Eric Britton said at a recent transport forum hosted by National Cheng Kung University (NCKU), Tainan, Taiwan.
"We'd like to have one city in Taiwan who says we can do that and we want to be the example not only for other cities in Taiwan but also other cities in the world," Britton added. Tainan city with the university, NCKU, can develop into a great model to demonstrate innovative ideas of transportation in a city, according to Britton.
"Low-carbon environment for the city and for the university is a goal we are pursuing," NCKU President Hwung-Hweng Hwung said and welcomed the guests who attended the 2013 low carbon transport forum at NCKU, September 13.
He also said, "Tainan city is rigorous in developing low-carbon traffic modes and several actions have been conducted including bus improvement program, bike lane and bike ways, and introducing electric vehicles."
"NCKU is also focusing on developing low-carbon campuses," according to Hwung. "We encourage students to walk and bike for their daily trips. We are also discussing how to develop shuttle bus systems among campuses, including main campuses, An-Nan and Kuei-Jen campus.
" Tainan city can be regarded as the most livable city in Taiwan, according to Director-General of Transportation Bureau of Tainan City Government Chen-Yuan Chang, who expressed that it always feels great to roam around the city of Tainan where the beauty of slowness is celebrated.
Taking a bus and walking would be the two best ways to travel around the city, Chang said.
In his talk, Britton also highlighted the public involvement and encouraged the general citizens to pay more attention on the exiting transportation in the city.
Britton said the ways of transportation in a city is expected to be more flexible and diversified, from which people can choose based on their life styles.
Beside Britton's talk, the President of Foundation for the Urban Environment Dr. Pierre Laconte was invited to the forum giving a talk on the contribution of public transport to livable cities. Enditem/
