A total of 20 Japanese students from Nanzan University are currently studying Mandarin at National Cheng Kung University (NCKU), southern Taiwan, and sharing their Taiwan cultural experience with other international students who are also having a good time immersing into the local community of Tainan.
Kuriki Sachika from Nagoya, Japan, who is first time to Taiwan, said that Taiwanese people are gentle and very friendly to foreigners. When being asked about the language learning in the Chinese Language Center (CLC) of NCKU, she said, "The teachers are helpful and I very much appreciate their patience in instructing me to understand everything here.
" These 20 Japanese students participated with about 40 international students from mostly the U.S, and Europe in "你說我猜" - a Chinese phrases guessing contest - held by CLC, August 15.
Ito Yuchika had participated in the contest to show her Chinese language proficiency and have fun with other international students at the center. She told the reporter that Chinese pronunciation is the most difficult part for her and even though she can read Chinese but she had hard time of understanding when people speak Mandarin.
Exerting not only the ability of communication in Chinese but the strength of team work, the participants have performed their best on the stage displaying what they have got in this summer at NCKU, according to Professor Rong-Fu Wu, Director of CLC, who hailed the students' improvement in learning.
Yuchika said that she enrolled the 5-week intense language program for Mandarin because she thinks that the economy in China is booming, and acquiring the ability to communicate with Mandarin is a necessity.
In addition to the language classes, CLC has arranged several cultural classes especially for the students from Nanzan University including Calligraphy, Chinese Diabolo, Chinese Opera, Foot Message, Chinese Cuisine, and Tea Ceremony.
Nanzan University is a private, coeducational university located in Aichi Prefecture, Japan. Nanzan is named after the forested mountains near Goken'ya-cho , known as Minamiyama, which literally means "southern mountain". Enditem/
