University presidents gather at NCKU to share opinions on higher education

The National Cheng Kong University (NCKU), southern Taiwan, hosted a delegation of a total of more than 80 members from the universities in Hong Kong, Macao, China and Taiwan, July 23.

The members of the delegation led by Chancellor Ovid J. L. Tzeng of the University System of Taiwan (UST) are mainly the university presidents who gathered in Taiwan for a visit and forum, July 20-26, to share their opinions regarding the connections among the universities and the sustainable development of higher education.

NCKU Vice President Dr. Hong-Sen Yan on behalf of President Hwung-Hweng Hwung welcomed the delegation and briefed on the past and present of NCKU and highlighted the significant achievements.

“NCKU has known to the world as the cradle of cultivating the most outstanding engineers in Taiwan and based on the cultural heritage of Taiwan, aims to develop into a world-class comprehensive university,” according to Dr. Yan.

The delegation from China and Hong Kong includes the former President of Peking University Zhi-Hong Xu, the former President of Tsinghua University Bing-Lin Gu, the President of Nanjing University Jun Chen, the President of Fudan University Yu-Liang Yang, the President of Shanghai Jiao Tong University Jie Zhang, the President of Zhejiang University Jian-Hua Lin, the President of Hong Kong University of Science and Technology Tony Chan, and the President of the University of Hong Kong Tsui Lap-Chee.

The delegation from Taiwan includes UST Chancellor Tzeng, Natioanl Taiwan University (NTU) former President Si-Chen Lee, NTU President Pan-Chyr Yang, National Chiao Tung University President Yan-Hwa Wu, National Tsing Hua University President Lih J. Chen, National Central University President Jing-Yang Jou, National Yang-Ming University President Kung-Yee Liang, National Chenchi University President Se-Hwa Wu, National Sun Yat-Sen University President Hung-Duen Yang, National Chung Hsing University President Der-Tsai Lee, Tunghai University President Ming-Jer Tang, Soochow University President Wei-Ta Pan, Chang Gung University Chia-Chu Pao, and Tamkang University President Chia-I Chang.

The Vice President of China Democratic League Hui Hsu said that Taiwan has a very highly developed society, especially in cultural preservation, technological development and environmental protection, which is very worth learning.
