NCKU overseas service learning group helps build green toilets at Yunnan
A total of seven students from National Cheng Kung University (NCKU), southern Taiwan, organized as an overseas service learning group to travel to Jinhe Village, Dali Bai Autonomous Prefecture, Yunnan, China, with a mission to be involved in a community development project by constructing environmental-friendly toilets and to exposure to the cultural and geographical context.
During their two-week stay at the village, the students builded ten toilets for the poor households and brought home with warm memories full of heart-felt feelings and insights.
“This is our fifth time to set up the environmental-friendly toilets for the villagers at Yunnan,” according to Po-Kai Hu(許博凱), a sophomore from the Department of Engineering at NCKU, who added, “All the hard work was definitely worth it.”
He also said, “Although the village equipped with the waste water treatment systems, most of the households there are still lack of toilets which leaves the sanitary issues a big problem to be solved.”
Under the guidance of the local construction workers, the students had learned to dig, move bricks and cement, lay the bricks and paste. The ten eco-friendly toilets with doors and producing natural fertilizer were constructed.
In addition, the students also served as tutors for the elementary students at the village, helping the children to appreciate the beauty of the world and familiarize some cultural aspects regarding Taiwan as well.
“When talking with villagers, I heard numerous stories about life and realize their life in the small village is not easy at all,” said Yu-Hsiu Yu(尤育修), a junior from the Department of Life Sciences, “Their positive attitude to face the hardship in a way affects my idea about life.”
“The program offers me an opportunity to integrate academic learning with meaningful service experiences,” according to Yu who claimed that he benefits from the service learning greatly.
Before departure, the students had received receive more than 40 hours of training including communication skills, conflict management, and reflection skills. During the visit, students met the challenges and learned to cooperate with each other to deal with any difficulties ahead.
