To encourage students to design the souvenirs with the spirit and impression of the university, the Art Center of National Cheng Kung University (NCKU), southern Taiwan, hosted a design competition named “NCKU impression, the imagery of NCKU,” recently.

A total of 7 winners are currently showcasing at the hallway of Yun-Ping Building and many eye-catching products are original designs inspired by the distinctive features of the university including phoenix flowers, red bricks and NCKU decorated archway.

The winners will have opportunity to commercialize the products with the help of NCKU Research and Development Foundation.

The first prize had been omitted, “CLIPU” designed by Ya-Ting Hsu (許雅婷) and Yi-Hsiu Liu (劉宜修) from NCKU Department of Industrial Design (ID) came to the second place and “Hiding Scenery,” designed by Hung-Jui Wu (吳泓瑞) and Fu-Hsin Cheng (鄭富馨) form NCKU ID took home the third prize.

Five Honorable Mention picks are “Tree Stand” (樹立), "Historic Buildings, Walking on Campus"(歷史建築,散步校園), a paperweight etching with the motto of university, Discover the Truth, Devoted to Knowledge (窮理致知), “Phoenix Lanterns”(鳳花燈), and “LOGO bags”( LOGO環保袋).

Paperclips are the necessary stationary frequently put on the desk and the designers fold and curve the iron wires to represent distinguish figures with the imagery of NCKU including Banyan trees, phoenix flowers, squirrels and Xiao Ximen, according to Hsu and Liu.

Wu and Cheng had hid the scenic images of NCKU campus in their design of product which are beverage coasters made from red bricks. The images can be easily identified by general public including the decorated archway and phoenix flower and Da-Cheng Hall are integrated into the product.

NCKU is a university full of history and culture, said the designers, and with the red bricks which can be seen around the campus, we realize our design with the material.

“The bricks with a high absorbency can be an ideal material for the beverage coasters,” noted the designers who integrated the beautiful scenery silhouette into the design of the coasters.

The coaster packaged with a description of the scenery would be a perfect gift for those who appreciate NCKU with the most scenic campus in Taiwan, according to Wu and Cheng.
