NCKU hosts a workshop to promote mobile learning

Recent innovations in digital learning were showcased at a workshop organized by the College of Social Sciences and the Institute of Education at National Cheng Kung University (NCKU), southern Taiwan.

The event was held on June 5 at “Cloud Classroom for Cognitive Connection and Enhancement” located at NCKU’s Magic School of Green Technologies and the College of Social Sciences with over 400 school teachers, leaders, government officials, and academics in attendance.

This event was funded by the Ministry of Education (MOE) to share the results of the implementation of the MOE’s innovative “Mobile Learning Counseling Pilot Project.” This mobile learning initiative was led by Professor Yuan-Chen Liu of National Taipei University of Education (NTUE) and NCKU Professor Ya-Ting Yang.

For this project, interdisciplinary counseling groups were formed to provide guidance and mentorship in designing innovative learning syllabi for 74 junior high schools and elementary schools with the goal of integrating mobile learning into Taiwan’s 12 Year National Education Curriculum.

The project continues to evaluate the effects of innovative learning on students’ physical and mental development in order to develop state-of-the-art learning environments and effective instructional models.

In his opening speech, NCKU President Hwung-Hweng Hwung discussed the evolution of learning and teaching approaches from traditional rote memorization to the introduction of multimedia into the classroom and the nowadays widespread use of digital learning tools.

“Teaching and learning are constantly changing,” noted by President Hwung. “NCKU’s main objective for promoting cloud-based learning is to foster innovative teaching, engage learning, and conduct meaningful research.”

NCKU Vice President Chih-Chin Ho, Dean of the College of Social Sciences, explained that, despite its short history, the College of Social Sciences has attained several great achievements.

Ho noted that NCKU’s Institute of Education is ranked in the top 100 globally and is widely recognized as one of Taiwan’s excellent institutes. These achievements are the product of tireless efforts to promote e-learning and integrate education, campus, and community resources in order to extend learning and deepen learning.

Director Stephen Jenn-Hwa Yang from the Department of Information and Technology at the Ministry of Education (MOE) reported that the annual output value of digital content industry is approximately 780 billion NTD, the majority of which is comprised of learning materials.

The MOE is committed to promoting digital learning with the intention of implementing and evaluating innovative and effective teaching and learning models. As such promoting digital learning is one of MOE’s five major administrative goals, with expectations to upgrade the current 10GB academic internet network bandwidth to 100GB within a year and increase classroom wireless internet coverage from 35% to 95%.

Keynote speeches were delivered by two renowned Taiwanese dignitaries, Commonwealth Magazine Senior Editor Chi-Yu Ho and Professor Daisy Lan Hung from National Central University (NCU). They provided their experience and insights on contemporary educational topics and outlined areas for future development, greatly enriched this meaningful event and received positive feedback from attendees.

Afternoon sessions were led by 50 pilot schools who shared their successful experiences in integrating of mobile learning. The workshop ended with a roundtable meeting, conducted by President Ching-Ji Wu from the Taiwan University of Education (TUE), a former Minister of Education, Tainan City Deputy Mayor Her-Jiun Sheu, MOE representative Stephen Jenn-Hwa Yang, NCKU Vice President Chih-Chin Ho, and Chyi-Her Lin, Dean of NCKU Hospital.

Overwhelmingly positive feedback was provided by attendees and all sessions were filled with teachers from all over the island. There are 33% more teachers attended than registered for the workshop, demonstrating the increasing momentum in Taiwan for innovative teaching and learning. By means of this education forum, ideas were exchanged for new vision and better quality of education in Taiwan.
