Vice dean of NCKU college of medicine dedicated to wetland conservation

The Vice Dean of National Cheng Kung University (NCKU) College of Medicine, Dr. Jiunn-Jong Wu, who is also distinguished professor at the NCKU Department of Medical Laboratory Science and Biotechnology and Institute of Molecular Medicine, contributes to not only the study of medical microbiology but Taiwan’s ecology and natural environment greatly.

Dr. Wu has been awarded the Fellow of the American Academy of Microbiology (AAM) recently to commend his excellent achievements and influence in medical microbiology.

His contribution is not limited to the academy. He also served as the former President of Wetlands Taiwan for three consecutive terms, contributing to Taiwan’s ecology and natural environment by making efforts in protecting and conserving Taiwan’s natural plants.

With love for the natural environment, Dr. Wu organizes ecology-themed trip annually for students of NCKU Department of Medical Laboratory Science and Biotechnology.

He has served as a tour guide at the field trip destinations such as the Chinese White Dolphin conservation area along the Chang-Hua coastal area polluted by chemical waste from Kuo Kuang Petrochemical, the Taiwan Black-faced Spoonbill conservation area as well as Aogu Wetland.

Other than introducing the birdlife ecosystem, Dr. Wu emphasizes on the environmental conditions. He said that if one of the environmental conditions becomes unbalanced, the fragile but precious ecological environment will be gone forever.

Such special field trips have become a special tradition which the NCKU Department of Medical Laboratory Science and Biotechnology is most proud of.

People who are acquainted with Dr. Wu notice that he has a humorous and considerate personality with a wide range of interests in many special areas.

He is good at time management, often emphasizing on achieving high efficiency at work. He said that he has made a rule to begin working on his academic papers at 3 or 4 o’clock in the morning when there is no disturbance. At night, most of his time will be spent in the laboratory, working alongside students at his department.

Even during holidays, Dr. Wu will never slack as he spends most of his time on environmental conservation activities. Besides, he also gives talks upon invitation by different civil societies, thus becoming the most suitable promoter of science education.

His target audience ranges from young kindergarten kids to uncles and aunties where everyone enjoys his amusing and interesting talks.

Recently, Dr. Wu has been appointed the President of Taiwan Association of Medical Technologists (TAMT). His most wanted wish is to fight for the rights of medical technologists in the country. At the same time, he also hopes to integrate medical laboratory technology and food safety technology with human health for the benefit of mankind.

Dr. Wu received his PhD degree at the Pennsylvania Temple University’s Department of Immunology and Microbiology, focusing on clinical microbiology, bacterial pathogenesis, bacterial resistance, epidemiology, nosocomial infection and others. Till now, Dr. Wu has published more than 250 Science Citation Index (SCI) papers.
