European biology organization recruits young scientists in NCKU
Tainan, Taiwan, June 13, 2013
Dr. Bertrand Jordan, a long-time member of EMBO (European Molecular Biology Organization), was invited by the College of Medicine at National Cheng Kung University (NCKU), southern Taiwan, to introduce EMBO to young researchers in the university.
The EMBO-Taiwan Discussion Meeting took place at NCKU College of Medicine, June 5, with over 60 students and teaching staff gathering to get the pictures and details regarding EMBO, an organization stands for excellence in the life sciences.
“New ways of global scientific interaction have been created following a cooperation agreement between EMBO, its inter-governmental funding body, the European Molecular Biology Conference (EMBC), and the National Science Council of Taiwan (NSC),” according to Academia Andrew Wang, Academia Sinica, who hosts the meeting.
He also said, “The agreement will allow Taiwanese scientists to participate in EMBO training programs and activities. It also means that EMBO Courses & Workshops can take place at Taiwanese research institutes.”
“Dr. Jordan serves as a Counselor for Scientific Communication at the French Genopole Network as well as a regular reviewer for Nature, Nucleic Acids Research, EMBO Journal and others,” according to Academia Wang.
“EMBO is considered as the gateway for Taiwan-Europe collaboration,” said Dr. Jordan, “EMBO helps young scientists to advance their research, promote their international reputations and ensure their mobility.”
Dr. Jordan pointed out, “Europe is as important as US for science and technology,” and said that EMBO supports talented researchers, selected through impartial evaluation processes, to allow them to do great science.
The wide scientific scope across the full range of life science research coupled with the broad geographical reach of more than 1,500 members and associate members – some of the best researchers in Europe and around the world – positions EMBO optimally to serve Europe’s life science community.
Dr. Chi-Huey Wong, President of Academia Sinica, is the first Taiwanese scientist who has signed up as an official EMBO member, according to Dr. Jordan.
He added that a key aspect of EMBO Young Investigators is networking and the members benefit from a vibrant and broad network of over 300 scientists, made up of current and former Young Investigators, and recipients of an EMBO Installation Grant.
