International Urban Planning Experts Share Vision of Sustainability at NCKU - Business Wire
TAINAN, Taiwan--(BUSINESS WIRE)--National Cheng Kung University (NCKU), southern Taiwan, hosted 2013 International Forum on Innovative Planning Education and Studio Exhibition, also called 2013 iCities, with professors and students from 7 countries, including the United States, the United Kingdom, Thailand, Singapore, Japan, the Netherlands and Taiwan.
Besides the second iCities forum, 2013 also marked the tenth anniversary of NCKU College of Plan and Design, said Dean Feng-Tyan Lin at the opening ceremony, May 24.
A total of 14 scholars in the field of urban planning education from America, the UK, Thailand, Singapore, Japan and the Netherlands gathered to share researches on the topic of Operating Sustainability.
2013 iCities consists of, according to assistant professor Hsiu-Zu Cheng, two parts, the scholars’ lectures, which contain 5 main topics, all related to the theme of sustainability, and the student forum, composed of students from the Netherlands, the UK and NCKU.
In addition to forum and lectures, iCities also contains work exhibition from both international and NCKU students. “We have 60 project works from 17 universities from the world,” said Dean Lin in his opening remarks.
The 5 topics of the forum include Legal and Policy Framework for Sustainable Development, Disaster & Sustainability, Transportation & Sustainability, Sustainability from International Perspectives and Water & Sustainability.
Prof. Ko-Wan Tsou, Director of the Department of Urban Planning briefly introduced the agenda of the forum, “The world needs every urban planner’s cooperation to solve urban and rural problems and conserve the earth for everyone which is the perspective of sustainability.”
Prof. Janet Askew, Head of the Department of Planning and Architecture, University of the West of England, UK, gave a talk on Teaching Sustainability: Healthy Cities in which she introduced the health map with the determinants of health and wellbeing in our neighborhoods.
Prof. Cecilia Wong from University of Manchester, UK, talked about government policies and programs in England and she pointed out the importance of the potential function and value of having a national spatial planning framework.
The poster exhibition showcased works done by students from 17 institutions of planning and design world-wide. The multi-dimensional arrangement of their works was inspired by an architect, Rem Koolhaas, who divided his works into four scales, as followed by the NCKU students, according to Cheng.
