Experts on urban planning and design from around the world gather at National Cheng Kung University (NCKU), southern Taiwan, to review the most current research on planning and design applications and experiences in the 21th century.

The 7th annual International Conference of Planning and Design (ICPD) is held May 20-24 at NCKU Y. S. Sun Green Building Research Center, with nearly a hundred people to attend.

“The conference committee has accepted 80 outstanding papers from 20countries,” according to Prof. Feng-Tyan Lin, Dean of College of Planning and Design, NCKU, who added that 5 eminent international scholars have been invited to give keynote speeches to an audience made up of members of public and private sector universities and research institutes.

The topics of the keynote speeches focus on up-to-date planning and design applications and the experiences of their countries have referred by the speakers as well.

Dean Lin said in his opening remarks, “The College of Planning and Design has held a series of international conferences, named the International Conference of Planning and Design (ICPD), biennially since 2001.”

He added, “The main objectives of these conferences have been to obtain insights into innovative orientations of academic knowledge and the dynamics of technical industrial development, and to share and disseminate our concepts and research.”

Professor Kuang-Hui Peng, President of Taiwan Institute of Urban Planning, gives a talk on “A Creative Journey in Formosa” and he claims that fostering the cultural and creative sector should be taken care by both central and local governments. Both sectors are two of the best ways to actually grow a city, create something new, and benefit to the general public.

The NCKU College of Planning and Design, established in August 2003, includes the Department of Architecture, Department of Industrial Design, Department of Urban Planning and the Institute of Creative Industry Design, according to Dean Lin.

Lin said, “The first three were originally part of the College of Engineering. These three departments have been pioneers, both professionally and academically, in their respective fields in Taiwan since they were first founded.”

Professor Robert W. Marans from University of Michigan, USA, gives a brief an overview of Quality of Life (QOL) studies conducted in cities and urban areas (QOUL). He describes a number of conceptual models used to test relationships between environmental conditions and QUOL.

Professor Steven French from Georgia Institute of Technology, U.S.A, talks about designing more sustainable cities by integrating infrastructure systems. He illustrates how understanding the interactions and synergies between and among urban infrastructure systems is key to creating more sustainable forms of urban growth.
