NCKU, city government collaborate to promote happy Tainan
Tainan, Taiwan,
The “Social Science Forum: Happy Tainan – Friendly Zeelandia”, a seminar jointly organized by NCKU College of Social Sciences, and the Ministry of Education (MOE) Department of Information and Technology Education, was held at NCKU Kuangfu Campus and Li-Hsing Campus, April 22.
The seminar focused on the integration of theories and practice to demonstrate the role of academic in caring for the society, especially the disadvantaged community, thus creating a friendly and happy Tainan City.
This seminar starts from the cross-disciplinary proposal granted by MOE, namely, “Cognitive engineering and innovative design: Study the social problems stemmed from modern technology from the perspective of cross-disciplinary technology.”
Based on the cross-disciplinary research led by the Dean of NCKU College of Social Sciences Dr. Chih-Chin Ho, the organizing committee invited Deputy Mayor of Tainan City Her-Jiun Sheu, and Vice President of Academia Sinica Fan-Sen Wang.
Other attendees included the Dean of the Taipei Medical University (TMU) College of Humanities and Social Science Chung-I Lin, Professor Dong-Shen Chen from the National Taiwan University (NTU) College of Social Sciences, Professor Lin-Ni Hau from Academia Sinica, Professor Feng-Tyan Lin from NCKU College of Planning and Design, Professor Fu-Ren Hsiao from NCKU Department of Psychology and twenty other scholars.
“One of the special features of NCKU is its involvement in cross-disciplinary integration,” explained NCKU Vice President Hong-Sen Yan while addressing all the participants in the seminar. “Such integration brings academic research beyond the ivory towers, thus expanding its efforts to lead students towards learning how to combine academic theories and practical applications.”
Deputy Mayor Sheu added that Tainan is a historical capital of culture, where NCKU has a pivotal position in Tainan City because almost all the universities in Tainan were formerly a subdivision of NCKU. Sheu experienced the efforts of promoting the integration of humanities and technology while serving in the academic world.
As the current Deputy Mayor of Tainan City, Sheu was delighted to see the willingness of universities to assist the government. The “Cross-technology Problem Solving-Based Course Plan” introduced by MOE aims to inculcate multi-thinking and problem solving skills in students while learning through the collaboration among professors of different disciplines.
“This seminar is a plan involving the integration of research and practice, where problems were identified and solved through research in the process,” said Academia Sinica Vice President Fan-Sen Wang. “This plan not only involves the collaboration of multiple disciplines to solve problems, it also represents the collaboration between a university and a city in realizing such an effort.”
Vice President Wang noted that NCKU is a top-tier university in the Southern Taiwan region. In the past few years, Taiwan has improved its competitiveness compared to European universities. With the full support of the Taiwan government and also through the effort to promote the “Top-tier University Plan” by MOE, the results in the first term was impressive, where universities that receive government grants such as NCKU have presented a new look in terms of teaching-learning research, industry-academia collaboration, community service as well as internationalization.
While visiting NCKU which roots were engineering, Vice President Wang realized how much effort the university has put into solving social and humanity problems.
This seminar has shown the fruits of labour from such research by NCKU as well as built an exchange platform.
The morning session of the seminar comprised keynote speeches by various distinguished guests, including “City and Trust” by Dean of TMU College of Social Science Ching-I Lin, “Socio-economic and Urban Farming” by Professor Dong-Shen Chen as well as “Social Practice and Research Theories” by the Director of NCKU Research Center for Humanities and Social Sciences, Hua Tai.
The afternoon session was hosted by NCKU Vice President and Dean of NCKU College of Social Sciences Chih-Chin Ho at NCKU College of Social Sciences located in Li-Hsing Campus.
