NCKU hosts the 21st Japan-Taiwan Orthopaedic Symposium

The 21st Japan-Taiwan Orthopaedic Symposium (JTOS) kicked off at Shangri-La’s Far Eastern Plaza Hotel Tainan with 12 professors from Japan and 25 professors in Taiwan presenting their latest research and sharing their clinical experience with each other.

The 21st JTOS, from April 18 to 21, sponsored by National Cheng Kung University (NCKU), southern Taiwan, and Kaohsiung Medical University explored the latest treatment regarding artificial joints, spinal joints, ankle, pediatric orthopedics and sports medicine, Prof. Mark Chii-Jeng Lin, Co-chair of the 21st JTOS said April 19 in his opening remarks.

NCKU president Hwung-Hweng Hwung welcomed all the participants, saying that the most important core value of this symposium is academic exchange of innovations for the purpose of promoting the welfare of orthopedic patients.

Tainan Mayor Lai Ching-Te said, this symposium is alternatively organized by Taiwan and Japan orthopedic professors and the purpose of this meeting is very similar to that of Tainan City Government - to create healthy, active, energetic and happy lives for people.

Prof. Lin also mentioned that the 21st JTOS promoted the long-term cooperation and friendship between and Taiwan and Japan, no matter what the challenges had been since the first symposium on 1991.

Prof. Hiroshi Yamamoto who shared his experience in promoting The Bone and Joint Decade (BJD), Global Alliance for Musculoskeletal Health, in Japan said, in the worldwide comprehensive study, musculoskeletal conditions such as back pain, neck pain and arthritis affected over 1.7 billion people worldwide, the second cause of the life disability, the next to the mental conditions.

He pointed out that this burden has increased by 45% over the last 20 years and the rate of increasing is the number one among the all diseases.

“We, orthopedic surgeons to care the musculoskeletal diseases should pay an attention on this documentation and should talk to people and the government, policy makers, to take an action to prevent the musculoskeletal disability,” Prof. Yamamoto said.

Prof. Yasumasa Shirai also said, “Keep people moving is the slogan of BJD which is carrying out to improve the health of musculoskeletal system in the world.”
