RCA Professor talks design integration
“I think design is actually at this moment a stronger argument you can have which is much stranger than written words,” according to Martin Postler who gave a talk on Design Integration at an international design workshop held at National Cheng Kung University (NCKU), southern Taiwan, April 9.
Martin Postler, a designer and professor from the Royal College of Art (RCA), London, United Kingdom, with his student-based team, Platform 17, attended the “Mind the Gap” 2013 International design workshop in Tainan, April 9-12.
Prof. Postler and 6 graduate students from Platform 17 presented their current projects of design integration and shared their UK experience with the students in NCKU.
“Always focus on communicating the ideas in the best possible way,” said Postler who is happy to see the students from different countries talking and exchanging ideas from each other in the 5-day workshop.
The joint project carried out by the students from NCKU and RCA focused on 2 train stations, Tainan Station and London’s Marylebone station, which are historical transportation hubs both located in the city center.
“The stations are like our playing ground that we've had lots chances to try out the experiments,” said Postler who’d like to explore behavior in order to unveil the ingredients of human interactions, and design them.
Postler showed train stations from Hong Kong, India and the UK as examples to explore the possibilities of human interaction within the public spaces.
Displaying a station at Hong Kong where happiness is highlighted, Postler said, “I was thinking that why would I be happy in the train station? I probably don’t want to do anything in the train station. (And then I think) of course. Why not? This is exactly the gap we have talked about!”
7 RCA students shared their design projects - Neil Merry presenting “Idea of Control - 3D joystick,” Diana Simpson, “Waste Labs,” Gabriele Meldaikyte, “One-Handedness,” Simon Kinneir, “Design for the sight loss,” JiJeongwon, “Nature's Cycle to New Materials,” David Bellisario, “Informational Media and new way of Visual equipment,” and Kayleigh Thompson, “Smart Labeling and Sensor System.”
Postler has worked for diverse design agencies in Hamburg, Hong Kong and London for clients including Boeing, Lufthansa, Airbus, Nokia and Deutsche Telekom and received numerous awards including the Raymond Loewy Foundation Award, Red Dot, IF Design, DAAD and Invent Scholarship from the German Ministry of Education.
The interests of Platform 17 are mainly in the multi-layered realities of today's mass manufactured electronic products and taking an active stance on how design can make meaningful changes in the future.
