NCKU hosts Medical Device Innovation Alliance Forum
Tainan, Taiwan, Mar. 11, 2013
A total of approximately 80 experts in the field of industry-academia cooperation gathered at the National Cheng Kung University (NCKU) Medical Device Innovation Alliance Forum, Mar. 4, to pool resources and boost collaboration among the allies.
The forum was jointly hosted by the NCKU University Advancement project managers Academician Dr. Ming-Chiao Lai and Professor Fong-Chin Su.
On behalf of NCKU President Hwung-Hweng Hwung, NCKU Vice President Hong-Sen Yan welcomed all the guests who attended the forum. “Now is the best time for such effort as NCKU has the strongest engineering colleges, especially the College of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science,” Vice President Yan revealed. “NCKU is also the local university with the best industry-academia collaboration efforts.”
Vice President Yan further stressed that under such conditions, NCKU has fully committed to the research and development of biotechnology. He hoped that this forum would stimulate further creativity and multiply the research capability of the alliance for the development of the medical world.
A total of 71 members have been recruited in the alliance which is considered to be the most dynamic alliance in the biomedical industry in Taiwan.
To connect academic research to the industry, the alliance has continuously organized conferences and forums in order to multiply the research capability in the medical device field.
Project Manager Academician Dr. Ming-Chiao Lai said the NCKU Medical Device Innovation Alliance integrates the NCKU Medical College, NCKU Hospital and NCKU engineering departments together with teams of clinicians to develop advanced medical devices.
Lai added that this alliance attempts to build a platform based on the theme and structure of the top six emerging industries, with the purpose of driving the medical device industry for the improvisation of human health and well-being.
The NCKU Medical Device Innovation Alliance joint project manager Professor Fong-Chin Su shared his experienced based on the forum topic entitled “The Trend and Opportunities of the Innovative Medical Devices”.
He mentioned that the 2012 Bio Taiwan Commission (BTC) revealed that through Taiwan’s effort in the development of biotechnology, the country should focus more on connecting the item market and the basic applied research in order to establish the mechanism of research that is based on the market’s direction.
“Industry problems and questions can be used to create action plans for industry-academia field and also cooperative education,” he further emphasized. “Thus strengthen the strategies and environment of the biotechnology industry.”
Apart from the alliance’s main mission of being a communication platform and integrating resources, the alliance also involves NCKU physicians in providing consultant services, education or clinical training guidance related to research and development through the alliance.
This would also include the transfer of know-how on the key process flow required for the development of medical devices, especially prototype development, pre-clinical testing, equipment testing, animal testing as well as in the form of designing education training and courses related to the medical device industry, in order to boost application of patents and also further enhance technology transfer.
The efforts of the alliance also assist international cooperation for the Taiwan medical device industry, thus providing assistance and information related to the regulations, international standards and clinical testing in the medical device industry, in order to enhance industry-academia cooperation and technical research and development, as well as to shorten time to market for new medical devices.
This can be seen through the connection between the Southern Taiwan Science Park (STSP) Industry-Academia Consortium, NCKU engineering departments, NCKU Medical Device Innovation Center and the medical device industry area.
Resource integration between the industry and academic world would drive the rapid development of value-added innovative medical device. In the future, the alliance would use the overall capability of NCKU to provide better services and information for its alliance members and work for the enhancement of innovation and technology.
