NCKU students giving abandoned bikes new life
Tainan, Taiwan, March 1, 2013
Hundreds of students from National Cheng Kung University (NCKU), southern Taiwan, gathered around at the field behind Kung-Fu dormitory to get a bike free for themselves.
At 11 am shot, local and foreign students hurried to get in lines and waited the 12:00 bell ring, and then they may choose a good second-hand bicycle that they can ride to get around the campus.
To “adopt” the once-abandoned bike has been considered as one of the great tradition of NCKU that not only benefit the students who need a bike but encourage cycling and raise the awareness of environmental protection around the campus, according to the university.
Along the beginning of each semester, NCKU Military Training Division (MTD) will offer hundreds of abandoned bikes that were repaired for the new students to claim for free. Students may try out the bikes and choose one suitable for them travelling around the campus.
More than 400 bikes were available for the students to claim at the lunch break of Feb. 25, according to NCKUMTD.
The campus of NCKU is vast with a total of more than 180 hectares of land which tops many the universities in Taiwan and the best way to commute on campus is riding a bike. To get a bike is always a top priority for the new students during the first week at NCKU.
To highlight the concept of global sustainability and environmental protection, NCKU has collected the bikes that were abandoned on campus and fixed them for students to use.
Vigliecca ADem, an NCKU freshman from France, accompanied by another 5 foreign students waited at the field to get a bike. “It’s almost like a gift from heaven,” they acclaimed. Happily, each of them got a bike that was good enough for them to get around the campus.
Chao-Ming Liao, a freshman from the Department of Electrical Engineering, who was the first one to finish the procedure of bike reclaiming said, “the campus is so vast that a freshmen will get nowhere without a bike.” He likes bicycles with renowned brand name and he was happy that he got a Giant bike.
Chia-Yun Hsieh, a new student from Department of Physiology, said that she was delighted to get a bike in sound condition that she won’t spend money to repair it and with a basket on the bike, she can carry books, water bottles, and other personal belongings with her.
