NCKU overseas service learning team builds toilets in Yunnan - FOCUS TAIWAN
Taipei, Feb. 20 (CNA) A student-based service learning team from Taiwan's National Cheng Kung University (NCKU) and China's Nankai University traveled to Xiangyanta Village, Haidong Town, Dali, Yunnan, China, recently, to install environmental-friendly toilets for the villagers and boost up cultural exchange among local students.
NCKU has been promoting service learning for years and the fruitful results has drawn students from several universities in China coming to NCKU to join the service-learning projects in consecutive years, according to the university.
In total of 15 students and 3 teachers stayed at the village for 15 days, Jan. 17-31, and built 6 toilets for the villagers.
By installing the environmental-friendly toilets for the villagers, we hope to protect the environment of Xiangyanta Village and promote the concept of environmental protection, according to Chang Chen Wu who lead the team.
In addition to the construction, the team helped to raise the awareness of environmental protection and hygiene among the local students and introduced Taiwan culture to them, Wu added.
After finishing the toilet-building, the team held a service-learning workshop at Nankai University, Jan. 1-5, to reflect what they do and learn from the project in Yunnan.
The workshop included 60-hour courses for the team members to share and exchange their experience and reflection during their stay in Yunnan.
By systematic learning, the students familiarized with the basics in the field of service learning and verified the theories in the practice with the project, according to Wu, adding that in the process of reflection and group discussion, the members were claimed to be benefit greatly.
"With close observation of the construction workers, I admired their professional skills and the requirements to make a good worker," said Hui-Ling Chung who realized that there's always something you can learn from the people around you when you pay attention.
Yu-Qing Li, a student from Nankai University, said that people are strong-willed, humble and believed firmly that a person can affect the life of others when they join the projects of service learning.
