Prof. Pao-Shan Yu and Prof. In-Gann Chen from National Cheng Kung University (NCKU), southern Taiwan, are the winners of 2012 Ho-Chin Tui Foundation Award, the university announced recently. They were awarded for their significant contributions in science and academia-industry collaboration.

Prof. In-Gann Chen received Ho Chin Tui Award on Outstanding Contributions in Metal Smelting while Prof. Pao-Shan Yu, in Environmental Protection.

Prof. In-Gann Chen’s researches focus on the fundamental processing mechanism of metallic materials, including both direct reduction iron and nano-scale metallic ink.

He is currently the Distinguished Professor, the Associate Vice President of Office of Research and Development and the Director of Metal Technology Research Center at NCKU.

“The researches had created new opportunities for both steel industry with lower carbon dioxide production as well as for integrate circuit (IC) package industry with better interconnect at lower processing temperatures.” Prof. Chen added.

Prof. Chen received his bachelor degree of Metallurgical and Materials Science at NCKU in 1978, master degree of Metallurgical Engineering at the University of Alabama, USA in 1982, and doctoral degree of Materials Science and Engineering at the Ohio State University, USA in 1987.

He was a Research Scientist and Research Assistant Professor at the Texas Center for Superconductivity, USA from 1989 to 1994. Since 1994 he has been a faculty member of the Department of Materials Science (MSE) and Engineering at NCKU and served as chairman of the department from 2003 to 2006.

Prof. Pao-Shan Yu who is also the Dean of NCKU College of Engineering, a recipient of Distinguished Research Award from the National Science Council, and several research or paper awards from NCKU and academic communities has been active in academic and social services.

His research interests involve climate change, hydrological modeling and analysis, water resources engineering, real-time forecasting, and remote sensing.

Prof. Yu’s research on environmental protection is viewed as an outstanding contribution in strategically reducing Taiwan environmental impact of natural disasters and significant in the field of academic research and engineering practices.

Prof. Yu received his Ph.D. in civil engineering from the University of Birmingham, U.K. in 1989, and later started academic service at NCKU as an associate professor in the Department of Hydraulic and Ocean Engineering. He was promoted Professor in 1996, and was entitled Distinguished Professor in 2005. Formerly he held the Department Chair of Hydraulic and Ocean Engineering and currently is the Dean of the College of Engineering at NCKU.

Established by the Ho Chin Tui Foundation in 1991, the Ho Chin Tui Foundation Award recognizes outstanding researchers in the fields of fundamental science, materials science, metal smelting, environmental protection and green building.
