NCKU students promote service and learning

A reading camp organized by Philanthropy Club from National Cheng Kung University (NCKU), Tainan, recently held at Chifen Elementary School, Pingtung County, to motivate the young learners to pursuit knowledge and promote social service learning.

The camp featured in reading and learning was led by 18 university students who had brought the books and prepared the teaching materials by themselves. They stayed with the elementary students in the classroom for 4 days and designed courses with classic reading and scientific experiments.

There were 38 children participated the 4-day camp where the club members had led them how to be a successful learner.

“I will work hard to score high and NCKU is my top choice for university,” said Jia-Wan Chen, one of the participants who was motivated by the leading of the senior students.

“This is a journey of hope,” said Hsing-Fang Lee who was in charge of the camp, “when kids who join the camp are motivated by gaining knowledge and there is more received by everyone in the camp.”

“We organized the reading camp with a hope to facilitate the kids in remote areas with free tutoring and healthy reading habit,” according to Lee, a junior student from Department of Politics, NCKU.

He said, the activities were designed to form a reading habit among the students with various themes including humanity, marine education, math, classic literature, scientific and technological innovation, Taiwan culture, and music courses.

More activities were included crafts, performing arts, science experiments, games, disability experience centering on reading to help the kids to learn to read in a fun way.

NCKU Philanthropy Club established for more than 78 years is one of the oldest clubs in the university. Over the years, the social service to the elderly and youth is the mission of the club.
