Overall decrease in applicants to Taiwan’s graduate program

The graduate-school entrance exams of Taiwan’s universities kick off on the first day of February. The examinees who aspire to be accepted in National Taiwan University (NTU) attain the exam today and the exam for the graduate programs of National Cheng Kung University (NCKU) will take place at the end of this month.
There are 15,095 students enrolled in NCKU’s graduate-school entrance exam, 2,642 drop than last year. The graduate admission rate is higher than 11.72%, with the lowest rate in the Graduate Institute of Finance and Institute of Computer Science and Information Engineering at 2-4%, according to the university.
It can be observed that a general decline in the number of graduate-school entrance exam registration occurs this year in Taiwan.
The total application number for NTU’s graduate-school entrance exam has fallen and the proportions for applicants in National Tsing Hua University and National Chiao Tung University are both drop by over 24%.
“Probably because the economy is getting sluggish, hunting for a good job is the first priority for the university graduates at a time when jobs are in short supply,” according to NCKU’s Secretary General Chin-Cheng Chen analyzing the possible cause for the decline in overall number of the applicants.
NCKU will host the graduate-school entrance exam at Tainan and Taipei, Feb. 23, 24, respectively.
A total of 72 departments and institutes at NCKU have offered graduate programs, according to the university, and a new EMBA program at the Institute of Telecommunications and Management was set up for its first applicants.
The application for the entrance exam in the Department of Electronic Engineering makes up the highest proportion, accounting for 1,011 students. The department will accept 58 applicants for this semester, making the acceptance rate at 5.74%.
The second highest proportion is in the Department of Computer Science and Information Engineering, accounting for 928 applicants with acceptance rate at 4.2%.
The Graduate Institute of Finance has the lowest acceptance rate among all departments in NCKU by 2.83%. There are 495 students applied for the graduated program when the institute only accepts 14 students.
