US’s BGST director visits NCKU to boost up academic cooperation - Noodls

"The innovation from academia-industry collaboration will pay off in a short term for NCKU and for the economy of Taiwan as well," said Dr. William O. (Bill) Berry at National Cheng Kung University (NCKU), southern Taiwan, Jan. 7.
Dr. Berry, the Director of the Board on Global Science and Technology (BGST) at the National Academies' National Research Council (NRC) accompanied with Dr. Jim Chang from United States Army Research Laboratory (ARL) visited NCKU, Jan. 7-8, to strengthen the partnership between NCKU and American academia and to discuss the prospects of future collaboration.
NCKU President Hwung-Hweng Hwung welcomed Dr. Berry who was visiting Taiwan for the first time, and introduced the beautiful NCKU campus helping him to get round during the two-day visit.
NCKU President Hwung, a hydraulic expert, and Dr. Berry, a life science expert, had exchanges opinions regarding the collaboration in disciplinary fields.
"I'm impressed with NCKU's research capacity and the its healthy relation with the industry in Taiwan. The innovative efforts on alternative energy and biomedical devices are especially promising," according to Dr. Berry.
He added, "BGST is charged with overseeing activities to assess the implications for U.S. policy makers of the globalization of science and technology."
Dr. Berry praised NCKU for being a distinguished university in Taiwan and said he can see a big potential in collaborative projects between the academic institutes in the U.S and NCKU.
"NCKU is the best comprehensive university in Taiwan and its faculty and facilities are truly some of the best in the nation, "said Dr. Chang who is the colleague of Dr. Berry and the alumna of NCKU.
In his two-day visit in NCKU, Dr. Berry had visited College of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, Department of Life Sciences, Department of Hydraulic and Ocean Engineering and research centers including Research Center for Energy Technology and Strategy, and Medical Device Innovation Center.
