NCKU Art Center recruited the NCKU Mandolin Orchestra around 2008 for a more widespread interest of Mandolin on campus. Professor Chi Wang as its leader said that the 20 musicians are ready to take stage at Malaysia, performing the beautiful tune of Taiwan to the international audience.
The musicians of NCKU Mandolin Orchestra will take stage at Kuala Lumpur and Miri in north Sarawak for charity and the profit will donate to the local charity organizations, according to Wang.
NCKU Art Center Director Wen-Jen Hsieh said that the debut in Malaysia is not only a significant milestone for NCKU Mandolin Orchestra but a great opportunity for civil diplomacy to gain international experience.
The repertoire the Orchestra prepared for the Malaysia debut includes western classical music and Taiwan folk music as well, according to Wang.
NCKU Orchestra will take stage with Malaysia’s Kuen Cheng High School, Jan. 19, at Kuala Lumpur and then with Malaysia Maple Leaf Chamber Ensemble at Miri, Jan. 20.
Mandolin originated from Italy now has taken its own distinctive root in Taiwan. Prof. Wang said, with the support from Chi Mei Corp President Wen-Lung Hsu, NCKU has been promoting a more widespread interest in Mandolin in Taiwan. Nowadays, Mandolin has integrated with Taiwan culture displaying its own Taiwanese feature.
Mandolin courses are included in the General Course of NCKU in 2008 for students who are interested in Mandolin to enjoy the fun of learning the instrument.
