NCKU set up College of Sustainability to raise awareness
Tainan, Taiwan, Jan. 15, 2013
A College of Sustainability was set up at National Cheng Kung University (NCKU), southern Taiwan, recently, offering an opportunity for the students and professors in NCKU to engage meaningfully with issues of environmental sustainability and conservation.
College of Sustainability was officially launched at NCKU Department of Life Sciences at 10 am, Jan. 10.The opening ceremony was hosted by NCKU President Hwung-Hweng Hwung and was joined by Academician Chang-Hung Chou and other teaching staff and students at NCKU.
President Hwung was proudly announced that Taiwan’s first ever college promoting education and research in sustainability was set up in NCKU.
The purpose of establishing NCKU College of Sustainability is to design strategies based on courses and activities using teaching and research methodology, as well as to actively assist other NCKU departments, university projects and teachings staff in developing education and research related to sustainability, according to Academician Chou.
He said, the college would also ally with neighboring primary schools and secondary schools to form environmental sustainability strategies, hence taking one step further to become the think-tank of sustainability development in Tainan, Southern Taiwan and all of Taiwan.
President Hwung claimed that there were roughly 120 million people without clean drinking water in year 2012.
It was predicted that by year 2050, the total population will reach 10 billion and water will be severely insufficient for all, hence becoming a serious problem in the future.
Besides, organisms and food supply will also face similar problems. Hence, the question of how to ensure survival and sustainability in the future world is one that needs our immediate attention.
Hwung added that to contribute to future generations is to do and think of something that others have not. This was the reason as to why Academician Chou was invited to lead NCKU College of Sustainability due to his far-sighted views and his contributions to ecology studies.
Due to the fact that sustainability will become the biggest problem faced by humans in the future, President Hwung invited Academician Chou to give courses to raise the awareness of environmental sustainability among the students.
NCKU would also consider constructing a building based on sustainability, allowing students to carry out the concept of sustainability.
According to Academician Chou, NCKU has talented faculty in the academic field of sustainability and Tainan City where the university located possesses the unique cultural features of an ancient capital.
NCKU College of Sustainability exhibits its function of interdisciplinary education and research, making NCKU the first university in Taiwan to promote the concept of sustainability education and development.
Academician Chou said that in the past twenty years, many scholars and government agencies have been promoting the efforts of sustainable development, but there was a lack of communication and an integration platform.
NCKU College of Sustainability can collaborate with Tainan City in education and development projects to include the concept of sustainability, realizing the conservation of sustainable ecology and biodiversity.
Tainan City will be expected to become the first sustainable city in Taiwan and also help promote global sustainability.
